It stands on land seventeen acres large and was a design of architects Bernard Maybeck and William Gladstone Merchant in the Beaux-Arts style. It went on to become a motor pool for limousines used by members of the UN, then in San Francisco. It would go on to serve many similar uses. In 1964, the original structure was demolished and the buildings were reconstructed. In 1969, the new venue housed an interactive museum, the Exploratorium, and the Palace of Fine Arts Theater in 1970, with nearly a thousand seats at the time.
