The musical was on tryouts for twelve weeks in Stratford between 2010 and 2011, where it was produced by Royal Shakespeare Company. A few months after these performances, it received a premiere on West End at Cambridge Theatre, and in a matter of few more months, the production opened on Broadway by 2013. The show has been the subject of much critical acclaim as well as box office popularity, winning as many as seven Olivier Awards in one go in 2012 including the category of Best New Musical. The Royal Shakespeare Company decided to stage a musical adaptation of Dahl’s Matilda, with a creative team comprising of playwright Dennis Kelly, composer/lyricist Tim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, set designer Rob Howell and music supervisor/ conductor Chris Nightingale. The musical was performed in Stratford-upon-Avon at their famous Courtyard Theatre in December 2010, after several previews. With choreography by Peter Darling, the show featured Bertie Carvel as Miss Trunchbull, Josie Walker and Paul Kaye as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood, and Lauren Ward headlined as Miss Honey. The title role was alternated by three other actresses: Kerry Ingram, Adrianna Bertola and Josie Griffiths. The staging came to a close in January 2011.
 
The Stratford, London and New York productions of Matilda the Musical received very similar critical acclaim from across the web and National press. The Daily Telegraph described the Stratford performances as the best of British musicals since Billy Elliot, while The Independent noted them to be an improved edition of the original story that has been cleverly adapted with an intricate, witty score. The London production was reviewed by Daily Mail to have ‘stonking songs’ calling it ‘a beastie baddie’, while The New York Times observed how the protagonist’s inspiring imagination makes this disjoint old world appear all fixable. The musical as seen by New York, was described to be the most sparkling British musical after The Lion King according to Time Magazine, while New York Post ranked it among those show that come out blazing once in a blue moon restoring faith in Broadway.
 
Matilda the Musical won several accolades for its original London productions starting in 2011 when it won the category of Best Musical from three academies: Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, Evening Standard Award and Theatre Awards UK, where the latter also awarded it the category of Best Performance. The show won also several Whatsonstage.com Awards for Best New Musical, Best Choreographer, Best Set Designer and London Newcomer for the Year, from among a host of nominations. In 2012, it received various nominations from Laurence Olivier Awards winning the categories of Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in Musical, Best Director, Best Set Design, Best Theatre Choreographer, and Best Sound Design.

The following year, it was nominated for another Laurence Olivier in the category of Audience Award as Most Popular Show, while alongside the musical was also nominated by Whatsonstage.com Awards for being the Best West End Show.
