Joe Cocker is a Grammy Award winning artist who has been ranked as one of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by the Rolling Stone magazine. He grew up in Sheffield and began performing at the age of twelve, with his brother’s skiffle group. In 1960, he founded his first band known as the Cavaliers with three friends, performing his first concert at a youth club. This marked the beginning of his career in music, a career he would continue to perform while working.
In 1961, Joe Cocker began performing live as Vance Arnold and started a group known as Vance Arnold and the Avengers. He performed live at many venues and pubs in Sheffield, performing covers of songs by artists such as Ray Charles and Chuck Berry. In 1963, they rose to fame with their first big concert supporting the Rolling Stones during their UK tour, when they performed at Sheffield City Hall. In 1964, he began his solo career in music and was signed onto Decca Records. His debut single was a cover of I’ll Cry Instead by the Beatles and featured Jimmy Page playing guitar.
In 1964, Joe Cocker founded another group known as Joe Cocker’s Big Blues and released an EP titled as Rag Goes Mad at the Mojo, released at a concert held in Sheffield College. In 1966, he founded the Grease Band with Chris Stainton and performed with it in the Sheffield area. Their music soon caught the attention of Denny Cordell, producer to bands such as Procol Harum and Georgie Fame. He soon left the band to start his solo career again with the song Marjorine which was successful in the US and the UK.

He again formed the Grease Band, this time as a live touring band. He toured with The Who, Marmalade and Gene Pitney.
