Celtic Thunder is an extremely renowned band of male soloists named Damian McGinty, Keith Harkin, Ryan Kelly, George Donaldson and Emmet Cahill. They also perform ensemble numbers. Celtic Thunder is basically the name of two distinct music bands and the first band played their first gig in 1977 at the Harp Pub in Baltimore. The present day Celtic Thunder features a variety of commercial Irish and non-Irish material sung by a variety of male vocalists and others. The band uses different instruments like the flute, whistle, piano, Irish step-dance, guitar to create their unique sound. It is more of a tribute to the original band. The new band started earlier in 2008. It was featured throughout the United States on PBS television network more than 1200 times between May and June 2008. Local PBS stations aired special features on the band and exclusive interviews conducted during breaks between their live performances. The band, through its music, has been trying to celebrate and promote Celtic heritage and culture. There are frequent references to the loves, passions, attitudes, individuality and strengths of Celtic people. Celtic Thunder has a huge lineup and some fifteen musicians and singers together form the band. The lead singer for the band is Emmet who is only twenty one years old and hails from Mullingar, Ireland. He began playing piano when he was very young was doing proper voice training by the time he was seven years old. The year 2010 saw him getting several awards and distinctions for his achievements in the music industry. He was awarded the most Promising Young Tenor for John McCormack Bursary, and was named the most promising young singer at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He is joined on stage by fellow vocalist Keith Harkin who comes from County Derry in Northern Ireland.
When Harkin was only four he started performing for the public in local concerts. He wooed the audiences with his beautiful voice and his confidence on stage. At a very young age he has been able to perform in front of crowds in USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom. The two young members of the group have with them on stage the old and the seasoned George Donaldson, who is a famous balladeer, and is an expert with the guitar and a flute. Having spent his childhood in Glasgow, the seed of Celtic love was planted in his heart at a very young age. Also a member of the group is Neil Byrne who received his passion for music from his father who was also a musician. He started playing in his school concerts from a young age and later was the winner of an -Ireland Music and Arts competition in which he had to face competition from 33,000 participants.
Another interesting member in Celtic Thunder lineup is the young but extremely talented Daniel Furlong, who joined the group only recently. At only thirteen years old he is a boy soprano. He was discovered after winning a talent hunt for singers, when he was just seven years old. He has been performing at different events since then and has made the music critics sit up and take notice of his talent.
Between 2008 and 2012, Celtic Thunder has released nine music albums essentially making them one of the few groups to release this many albums in a short time. The band released its self titled debut album in March 2008, and followed it with a second release Act Two in September the same year. Take Me Home was released in 2009, and in 2010, the band released two more albums. It's Entertainment! was released in February and an album featuring Christmas ballads aptly titled Christmas was released in October later in the year.
