World Professional Darts Championship is the most anticipated and decorated event of the sport, being held annually since 1978. The event organized by the British Darts Organization was first time held at the heart of the Midlands night club in Nottingham. In 1979 the event changed its venue and moved to Jollees Cabaret Club, Stoke, where it would stay until 1985. From 1985 till present the event is being held at Lakeside Country Club at Frimley Green, Surrey every year.

In 1994 another darts championship was introduced by the Professional Darts Corporation. Its inaugural event was held at Purfleet's Circus Tavern, Essex which would later change to Alexandra Palace in 2008?s event.
Leighton Rees of Wales was the first ever champion of the World Professional Darts Championship winning a total purse of ?3,000. In its inaugural year the Championship offered a total purse of ?10,500. But in 2008 the prize money would be increased to the record level of ?310,000 including the prize money for the Men?s Champion of ?85,000. It will be the biggest prize money ever offered in BDO's World Championships history.
While commenting about regular and consistent increment in the prize money, Olly Croft of the BDO states that, ?yet more positive news for the BDO, and we are delighted that Lakeside's commitment to these great Championships is stronger than ever?. He further concludes that "Since Lakeside became main title sponsor in 2004; there have been consistent increases in prize money - especially for the World Champion. In 2004, the Champions cheque was ?50,000.
In 2008 it will be ?85,000. That represents a 70% increase! Needless to say, I am proud that the World Professional Darts Championships not only boasts such a significant prize fund, but that it also enjoys the true history of darts at the highest possible level. In addition, it has the largest TV audiences for darts anywhere in the world, plus the best players, finest officials, and the No.1 one venue in World Darts."
Darts Championship held on January 2008 at Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green, Surrey, was the 31st anniversary for Men's World Professional Championship, while being the 8th for women's World Professional Championship. While exclaiming his content while sponsoring the Darts Championship, proprietor of Lakeside Complex Bob Potter stated that, ?Lakeside is delighted to be continuing as main title sponsor of these great Championships for the fifth consecutive year?.
He further said that,? The atmosphere is unique, and we are privileged to play host to the world's top players - men and women - who produce ever-increasing standards of darts excellence year after year.?
Darts 31st Championship was broadcasted on BBC-1 and BBC-2. The Championship?s coverage was shown live in more than seventy countries offered by BBC Worldwide. Apart from BBC another German broadcasting company SBS-6 covered the championship live for the 11th time and brings the live championship in The Netherlands. Overall World Darts Championship is attracts the largest number of audiences for darts. The attendance for the 2007 Men?s final attracted up to five million viewers on BBC only.
