They have been one of the prominent ice hockey teams of National Collegiate Athletic Association. They play for Division I, which is the highest level of intercollegiate sports. They belong particularly to the intercollegiate hockey association known as the Hockey East. They play all of their home games at the Mathews Arena, which was formerly known as Boston Arena. It is considered to be the oldest indoor ice hockey arena in the world. It can accommodate more than five thousand and nine hundred fans at each game. It was opened in 1910 and is currently being owned by Northeastern University. It was also the home field for the professional ice hockey champions Boston Bruins, before they shifted to the Boston Gardens in 1928.
The Northeastern Huskies program has been running successfully for more than half a century. They played independently in the National Collegiate Athletic Association program. In 1961, they joined Eastern College Athletic Conference and are the founding members of the Hockey East formed in 1984. The best time for the Northeastern Huskies hockey was in 1980s, before that they struggled as a team. Their major success came in when they attained the status of being four time winner of Beanpot Tournament. They won the Beanpot Tournament for the first time in the season 1979-80.The next success for them was in 1983-84, followed by a subsequent win next year. The final victory for them was in the 1987-88 seasons and since then their fans are waiting for the same glory. The huskies have been the finalists of Beanpot Tournament for thirteen times.
Northeastern Huskies have been the Hockey East champions of 1988 and were in the competition for the season 2009, 1994 and 1988. In 1982, they also reached Frozen Four of National Collegiate Athletic Association. The current roster of Northeastern Huskies includes Drew Ellement, Jake Hoefler, Jamie Oleksiak, Drew Muench, Steve Morra, Randy Guzior, Braden Pimm, Brodie Reid, Steve Silva, Clay Witt, Mike McLaughlin, Wade MacLeod, Luke Eibler, Zak Stone, Drew Daniels, Mike Hewkin, Chris Rawlings, Rob Dongara, Bryan Mountain, Steve Quailer, Cody Ferriero, Garrett Vermeersch, Anthony Bitetto, Robbie Vrolyk and Tyler McNeely.
The team’s coach is Greg Cronin who was previously coaching New York Islanders. He has been associated with Northeastern Huskies for more than five years. He has been one of the most prominent coaches seen in this program. The other coach who was extremely popular was Fern Flaman. He was the player of the professional ice hockey team, Boston Bruins and was inducted in the Hall of fame for his exceptional performance. He coached Huskies from 1970 till 1989, which was the best ever time for the team.
Huskies has many memorable performances from players like Art Chisholm, Sandy Beadle, Jim Fahey, Jim Martel, Ray Picard, Jason Guerriero, Keni Gibson, Bruce Racine and Brad Thiessen. The team has created some of the most successful professional ice hockey players in the history. Some of these include David Poile of Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators, Bruce Racine of St. Louis Blues, Chris Nilan of Montreal Canadiens, Jim Fahey of Chicago Blackhawks and Michael Ryan of Carolina Hurricanes.
