Snarling with fury and bristling with the heat of the game, the Lobos move in for the kill again and again. No, this not an account of a famished pack of wolves in pursuit of their succulent prey, but that of the men's basket ball team of the University of New Mexico, also gruesomely referred to as 'the Lobos'.
This varsity basketball team is part of the Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and features in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). The sport of basketball is hardly a century old and though is now played in many port of the world, has evolved primarily in North America. Originally it was played with an association football that was lobbed into a peach basket nailed to the wall. It has only been since the 1950s that the distinctive orange rubber ball and metal hoops with a strung net have been adopted, along with the practice of dribbling that has come to hold a lot of fascination for the fans.
The Lobos basketball team was littered at the turn of the 19th century, just some 8 years after the sport of basketball was born and a decade after the University of New Mexico itself was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The first two odd decades were lackluster and the pups just barely unsheathed their claws. It was when the University's official mascot was selected as the "Lobo" after the Spanish name Lobo for "wolf" in 1920, did the Mexico team develop a mean competitive streak and began to teethe. They got their first proper den in 1957 in the form of the 'Johnson Gymnasium', the 7,800 seat basketball arena named after the 'Lobos' first coach. Later in 1966, the lobos were upgraded to the "The Pit", a 17,126 seat arena, complete with 40 exclusive luxury suites and club seats numbering 350.
The New Mexico Lobos Basketball team garnered nationwide acclaim in the 1960s, winning their first Western Athletic Conference. The team's successive players honed their skills under the tutelage of their coach Bob King and continued to rise through the ranks in their aggressive rivalry with the New Mexico State University's basketball team. Lobos such as Mel Daniels, Willie Long and Ira Harge have gone to bare their fangs in the American Basketball Association (ABA), as well as being drafted by the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Mexico basketball program literally fell deep into the pit in the late 1970s due to a player related academic transcript scandal and thus was reborn and reared into maturity throughout the 1980s whilst the Lobo pack struggled hard to rebuild their fan base.
In the 2009-2010 collegiate basketball season, the Lobos team of New Mexico was rated as being 8th out of a total of top 25 college teams in the Associated Press (AP) poll. The Lobos have also bagged 9 conference championships, comprising of 2 Border, 5 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and 2 MWC ones. Their Tournament Championship wins total 3, with 2 for WAC and one for MWC.The call of the wild has always been answered by the Mexico Lobos as well as their fans. Initially in the 1920s, a real live wolf cub actually used to make an appearance at each game. Presently, human mascots "Lobo Louie" and "Lobo Lucy" have taken on the duties of rousing up the fans in the stands to the point of having The Pit termed as "the loudest arena in the country".
The Mexico basketball mania shrieks off even before the tournaments begin with the "The Lobo Howl". It's a festivity filled event held at the start of the practice sessions in which the players sign autographs and show off their skills in three-point and slam-dunk contests. During the games themselves, the fans and the students bring up the rear for their team by shouting and singing particular slogans, chants and coordinated arm waiving as attempts to intimidate the opposing team's players. Students seated in the designated Section 26 in the arena even receive a "howl sheet" listing disgracing stats and details of the visiting team and so howl them out with great gusto.
