Everton have also won numerous FA Cups and were the founding members of the Football League in 1888. They won their first European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1985. They won their last FA Cup in 1995. Everton was formed as St Domingo in 1878. They won the first league championship during the 1890/1891. Their first FA Cup triumph came in 1906 followed by another league title in 1914-1915. Everton signed Dexie Dean in 1925 who went on to set a league record of 60 goals in 39 matches in the 1927-1928 season. Everton were relegated at one stage but they quickly recovered and got back in the first division within a year.

Their last triumph during this era was the league title in 1938/1939. The team was relegated again after the Second World War in the 1950-1951 season. They returned to division one in the 1953-1954 season in which they finished as runner-ups in the second division. The club was successful during the Harry Catterick era.
Everton won the 1962-63 league title and the 1966 FA Cup under Catterick. They reached the finals in 1968 but lost to West Bromwich Albion who were absolutely dominating that year. They won another league title in 1969-70 being a clear 9 points ahead of Leeds United.
After Catterick retired, Everton fell behind and they won nothing else during the 1970s. Their most successful period was with Howard Kendall. With him as manager, Everton won the 1984 FA Cup followed by league titles in 1984 and 1986. They won the European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1985 which was their first and only European trophy.
Everton defeated the great Bayern Munich 3-1 in the semifinals during this time. They beat Inter Bratislave, Fortuna Sittard and University College Dublin during this event as well. They won the finals against Rapid Vienna. They lost the final of the 1985 FA Cup to Manchester United.
Kendall left Everton after the Haysel Stadium Disaster and was replaced by Colin Harvey. Harvey took Everton to the 1989 final only to lose to Liverpool during extra time. Everton won their fifth FA cup under the leadership of Joe Royle in 1994 when they degeated Manchester United.
Roberto Maritinez is currently managing Everton for the 2012-2013 season. The club’s record received transfer fee of £27 million was for Wayne Rooney.
