After initially working in a Beauty Salon to make ends meet, she debuted her comedy career in 1975 at the Ye Little Club in Beverly Hills. Her fame spread and in 1977 she was cast on television for The Richard Pryor Show . In 1992 she created quite a storm by doing a nude pictorial for Playboy magazine.
Starting in 1995 she was the host of Reel Wild Cinema with Sandra Bernhard for two years. She also acted in mainstream films like Dallas Doll , Hudson Hawk and The Apocalypse along with making guest appearances in hit TV shows Chicago Hope and Ally McBeal. In 1998 Sandra Bernhard went to Broadway with I'm Still Here... Damn It! It ran for five months off Broadway and then played to sold out audiences in Boston and San Francisco. It was also filmed as Sandra Bernhard : I'm Still Here... Damn It and was broadcast as a HBO Special in 1999.
Over the next few years she continued to appear in small films as well as making TV appearances while touring on the comedy circuit as well. In 2001 she released her album The Love Machine which was based on her show of the same name. In 2006, Sandra Bernhard was back in New York with the show Everything Bad & Beautiful which many critics claim to be her best performance. She toured many US and European cities with it. The next year she started touring with her show Plan B from outer Space .
Sandra Bernhard has been included in Comedy Central’s list of the Greatest Stand-ups of all times and in at number ninety seven.
