Contemporary country music artist Phil Vassar rose to fame as a successful songwriter before becoming a chart-topping singer in his own right. Phil Vassar, born in Lynchburg, Virginia, had enough of music inspiration from his father, a successful local singer, but chose for a more conventional career by majoring in business studies. However, it was during his time at university that he begun to realize his true talents.

After university, Vassar moved to Nashville and began bartending to pay his bills while learning piano, writing songs and singing in local clubs. Within years, he bought the club where he had been performing which led to one of the patrons of the club to realize his musical talents. This patron turned out to be the son of famous crooner, Engelbert Humperdinck who liked and recorded Vassar’s song ‘Once in a While’ effectively commencing his musical career. After co-writing songs for a number of music artists who would frequent his club for performances, he was signed by EMI as a publishing artist. As a songwriter for EMI, he penned down various chart-topping hits for Alan Jackson ( ‘Right on the Money’ ), Blackhawk ( ‘Postmarked Birmingham’ ), Collin Raye ( ‘Little Red Rodeo’ ), Neal McCoy ( ‘I Was’ ), Tim McGraw ( ‘For a Little While’ and ‘My Next Thirty Years’ ) and Jo Dee Messina ( ‘I'm Alright’ and ‘Bye, Bye’ ). This prolific stint with pen earned Vassar ASCAP's songwriter of the year award in 1999.
Hitting the top as a songwriter, Phil Vassar landed a record deal with Arista Nashville in late 1999. He released his debut album ‘Phil Vassar’ in 2000 featuring his up-beat debut single Carlene which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard country charts. Another single from the album Just Another Day in Paradise reached number 1 on Billboard charts and That's When I Love You peaked at number 3. The album was a success earning certified-gold status within months of its release. He followed this success with his second album ‘American Child’ which peaked at number 4 on Top Country Albums charts. The album featured two famous songs American Child and This Is God . Vassar released his third album ‘Shaken Not Stirred’ in 2004 featuring Vassar's second number one hit In a Real Love . This album was recorded with his road band and Vassar as co-producer. After releasing Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 in 2006, Paul Vassar parted ways with Arista Nashville to become associated with Universal South Records. Under new record label, he released ‘ Prayer of a Common Man’ in 2008 featuring number 2 country charts hit Love is a Beautiful Thing . Vassar’s latest album ‘ Traveling Circus’ was released in 2009 again featuring his road band.
