Originally when the ensemble entered the punk rock music scene in the 1980s, they were part of the 924 Gilman Street; a music club that was non-profit in nature. They were also originally named “Sweet Children”. At that time, the releases that the band produced were mostly through an Independent Record Label Company named Lookout! Records. This record company approached the band in 1988, when its owner, Larry Livermore, saw the members play at a show. After they signed on to this record company, they were advised by Larry Livermore to change their name. It was in this year, that Sweet Children became Green Day. This name was taken up by the band as a result of their infatuation with marijuana.
The punk rock collective released their debut rock album named “1000 Hours” in 1990. They then went on tours throughout Europe in the year 1992 and 1993. Upon their return they released their second studio album which was soon to become their claim to fame. The name of this album was “Kerplunk” and it was able to sell fifty thousand records throughout the United States. With the release of this album, major record label companies started approaching the band and they decided to sign up with Reprise Records, ending their contract with Lookout! Records. Through the newly formed coalition, recording of their major label debut album started immediately and took three weeks to complete. The album was named “Dookie” and it came out in 1994, becoming a worldwide commercial success almost immediately.
By means of massive airplay provided by the MTV music channel, videos of songs such as “Basket Case”, “Longview” and “When I Come Around” were played continuously and they became chart toppers. They were able to reach the number one spot on the Modern Rock Charts. After the success of “Dookie”, the group started a lineup of tours and concerts. They started off by performing with Pansy Division, on a national tour after which they brought to audiences the memorable performances at the Hatch Memorial Shell, Woodstock festival and the Lollapalooza festival of 1994. All these tours and performances helped “Dookie” reach Diamond status.

This tentative album was able to bring forward records such as “Time of Your Life”, “Hitchin’ a Ride”, “Redundant” and “Nice Guys Finish Last”.
