Hailing from the city of Essex, the current lineup of the band consists of lead vocalist and occasional songwriter, Dave Gahan, keyboardist Andy Fletcher and guitarist and chief songwriter, Martin Gore. Previous members of the group include Alan Wilder, who remained the drummer and keyboardist till 1995 and keyboardist, Vince Clarke who parted from the band in 1981. The origins of Depeche Mode’s foundation dates back to 1977 when schoolmates Fletcher and Clarke decided to establish a band named No Romance.
With Clarke providing the vocals and playing the guitar and Fletcher handling the bass, No Romance was a short lived music project. In 1979, Clarke started playing with Martin Gore and Robert Marlow’s band named The Plan. During this time, Clarke and Gore decided to form their own group alongside Fletcher. And it was in 1980 when the trio created Composition of Sound with Clarke providing his vocals, Fletcher on bass and Gore playing the keyboards.
While creating music it was Fletcher and Clarke who decided to experiment with synthesizers and thus they switched to use of electronic instruments. They picked up their fourth band member, Dave Gahan in the same year after hearing him perform Davie Bowie’s “Heroes” at a local jam session. This marked the formation of Depeche Mode. The name was inspired by a French fashion magazine. Depeche that loosely translates to dispatch while mode means fashion in French, Depeche Mode signifies “hurried fashion”.
Initially playing at school concerts and local gigs, the group recorded their debut track and released it through their album which was named “Some Bizarre Album”. The album’s release was presented by Some Bizarre Records. The song that was featured on this album was “Photographic” which later received a major label release in 1981. Recording their demo tape in the same year, Depeche Mode started visiting major record label companies personally to deliver their recordings. They were soon being approached by labels such as Phonogram to work on the group’s debut album release.
However it was later on in the year that the quartet was approached by founder of Mute Records, Daniel Miller who became interested after watching them play a live gig in Channing Town. The result was a single release called “Dreaming of Me” that landed on the fifty-seventh spot of the UK Singles Charts. This was followed by a recording of their sophomore single, “New Life” which climbed to the eleventh place on the UK Singles Charts. Before the release of their debut album Speak & Spell, the band presented audiences with “Just Can’t Get Enough” and the track became the band’s first top ten hit in UK and to date remains one of their best songs.
