AlunaGeorge was formed in 2009 when George Reid approached Aluna Francis’ group My Toys like Me to record a remix of their track Sweetheart. Francis and Reid bonded immediately and decided to compose music together. The group’s vocals are often stated as being “child-like, heartwarming and sugar sweet.” The two artists are known to use sounds of “futuristic pop” that include garage, bass and dubstep. Reid and Francis often cite their influences as Destiny’s Child, Flying Lotus, Mariah Carey, Aaliyah, James Taylor, PJ Harvey, Hudson Mohawke and Chris Clark.
They signed onto Tri Angle Records in 2012 and came forth with a digitally downloadable track named You Know You like It in April. Two months later, the song was released on vinyl in June. You Know You like It was able to land on the nineteenth spot of the UK Dance Chart and 39th place on the UK Singles Chart. The track was labeled by Pitchfork Media as the “Best New Music.” After the success of this digital release, AlunaGeorge came forth with their debut commercial track. Titled “Your Drums, Your Love”, the song came out in September 2012. It debuted at the fiftieth spot of the UK Singles Chart.
AlunaGeorge’s debut studio album was released in June 2013, via Island Records. The album presented fourteen tracks some of which include “Outlines”, “Attracting Flies”, “Kaleidoscope Love”, “Bad Idea”, “You Know You Live It” and “Your Drums, Your Love.” Songs on the album were written by George Reid, Sam Frank, Montell Jordan, Ricky Walters, Oji Pierce and Aluna Francis. The record made its way to the eleventh spot of the UK Albums Chart and was also charted on international charts such as Belgian Albums Chart, Dutch Albums Chart, Irish Albums Chart and Scottish Albums Chart. The album was received well by audiences and critic publications alike. Metacritic provided it an accumulated score of seventy three out of hundred while Allmusic, the Guardian and Mixmag awarded it four stars out of five. If this wasn’t enough This Is Fake DIY gave it an eight out of ten while Pitchfork Media rated it 7.6 out of ten.
Remixes that have been released by the English duo includes “I’m His Girl” from Friends’ album Manifest released in 2011 and “Spectrum (Say My Name)” by Florence and the Machine’s record Ceremonials in 2012. Their most recent remix was Dirty Projectors’ “The Socialites” released in 2013. AlunaGeorge also worked with Disclosure on their song “White Noise” which was able to make its way to number two in the UK. All of the band’s song releases have garnered several awards and honors. In 2012 BRIT Awards for 2013 announced that the band had been shortlisted for a “Critics’ Choice.” A year later BCC added the band to its poll of “Sound of 2013.” AlunaGeorge was placed second amongst fourteen other strong contenders that included acts such as Arlissa, A*M*E, Chvrches, Angel Haze, Laura Mvula, Haim, Palma Violets, Little Green Cars, Kodaline, King Krule, Savages, Peace and Tom Odell.
