?The Grand Forks' is an agricultural city of North Dakota and is located in the Grand Forks County. It is the third largest metropolitan city of the state and the city with its twin sibling in Minnesota creates the centre of the Greater Grand Forks. The area lying on the fork of Red River makes it inclined to flooding yet the flat plains of the region ensure a great climate. The city was founded by a steamboat captain Alexander Griggs in 1870 and the French fur traders actually started calling this city as Les Grandes Fourches meaning Grand Forks in English.

Initially the fork of the Red River and Red River Lake was a key trading point for Native Americans. Early French voyagers with the pursuit of fur tapping and trading used to visit the area and gave it its present name. In 1870 the Alexander Griggs held as ?the Father of Grand Forks? was on a voyage and had his steamboat trapped in the red river due to extreme cold. Consequently the captain and his crew had to camp out at the Grand Forks and ever since the city grew tremendously. In 1997 Grand Forks hit a catastrophic flood and the whole city was devastated but the Folks of the region didn't lose heart. They saw this calamity as a time of conviction and turned their city into a big trading point with enormous personal and commercial development. The new Levee system and Greater Grand Forks Greenway are also developed to prevent any future damage from floods.

Grand Forks being the oldest city of Dakotas is the centre of historical monuments and the Museum of Art North Dakota is an ode to this history.
