Xcel Energy Center
Xcel Energy Center is a sports arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota, U.S. sponsored by Xcel Energy. Xcel Energy Center is a one-of-a-kind multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota's state capital. It is the home ice of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the NLL's Minnesota Swarm. The city of Saint Paul owns the arena.
It opened in the fall of 2000 and it is called the "X" by fans. It was built on the site of the demolished St. Paul Civic Center. In 2004, the arena was named by ESPN as the best overall sports venue in the United States. The arena contains four spectator levels: one suite level and three general seating levels named the 100 level, the club level, and the 200 level. Its official capacity is 18,064.
The 10 Millionth people passed through the gates on July 3, 2007 to see The Police Reunion Tour seven years after the building first opened.
The "X" is the current site of the Minnesota Boys' High School Hockey, the Minnesota Girl's High School Tournament, and the High School Wrestling tournaments, as well as the host of the Minnesota State High School League-sponsored volleyball state tournament. It hosted the 2002 NCAA Frozen Four and will do so again in 2011. The National Lacrosse League's Minnesota Swarm began regular season play in the arena in January, 2005.
The Xcel Energy Center won the bid to host the 2008 Republican National Convention. The arena will also host the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.
Situated on a six-acre site, encompassing 650,000 square feet, Xcel Energy Center is part of the RiverCentre Convention Center Complex, which also includes the adjacent Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Its transparent glass exterior creates a distinguished identity and unique welcome to its visitors.
With four separate concourses on four seating levels, plus the Al Shaver Press Box on the fifth level, Xcel Energy Center's open concourses are fan-friendly, measuring as much as 60-70 feet in width and providing fans with an open view of the ice. The venue seats 18,064 for NHL games and each of its four levels have been strategically situated to create great hockey sightlines.
There are 74 executive suites, including 12 on the main concourse and 62 on the exclusive executive suite level. The St. Paul Club Level consists of approximately 3,000 upscale seats with unique club and dining opportunities. Fans visiting this exceptional arena will enjoy state-of-the-art technology, including an electronic display system with 360-degree video boards, an eight-sided scoreboard, an advanced in-arena production studio and superior acoustics for concerts.
The building opened with the first-ever Minnesota Wild home preseason game versus the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (3-1 win) on September 29, 2000. Minnesota enters its fifth NHL season having sold-out every home game in franchise history.
The Xcel Energy Center's first-ever concert featured Barenaked Ladies and the Corrs on September 30, 2000. The year 2001 marked the return of the historic Minnesota State High School Tournaments to Saint Paul, where they had been held for 25 years before moving to Minneapolis during the construction of Xcel Energy Center. Over the past three years, the world-class arena featured such performers as Walt Disney's World on Ice, Dixie Chicks, Paul Simon and Brian Wilson, Prince, Tim McGraw, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Andrea Bocelli, Creed, The Who, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, The Eagles, John Mellencamp, Santana, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and Elton John.
