Webster Hall was named in 1974 for Leslie Webster of the class of 1915. It was originally built in 1909 to house the Biology and Geology Departments. The design of Webster Hall is marvelous. McKim, Mead and White designed the building and they were highly applauded for their great artistic work. A number of donors provided the financial support for the construction of the building. Andrew Carnegie was one of the leading donor who gave $75,000.
In 1912, two porches were added at the north entrances. These enhanced the beauty of the venue.
In 1948-1951, the building was remodeled for the use of the Biology Department alone. Several more additions and renovations were made over the years. These included Archives & Special Collections, Buildings and Grounds Collection, box 2, folder 21. These renovations gave the Webster Hall a splendid new look and provided great number of facilities. In 2000, the building was converted into the home of the Russian Department, the Asian Languages and Civilizations Department, and studios of the Theater and Dance Department. All these departments are providing the best of their related services.
Webster Hall is the largest, loudest, longest running dance club in New York City. and the world. Millions of people have graced the hallowed halls and concert stage of Webster Hall through the years, from the very large masses to the very famous.
The sound of the Webster Hall is excellent. It is remixed by Webster Hall's resident DJs and owner Lon Ballinger and it produced the amazing effects. The audiences have always appreciated the high sound quality of this hall and have entertained themselves with all the outstanding performances.
Over the past decade, Webster Hall has sold a million compilations of cutting edge dance and trance music. This is the BEST of the dance floor, from yesterday through today. The spectators love to visit this marvelous dancing hall on regular basis. They enjoy the dance performances with great spirit. It is a place of fun and excitement for them.
