Virginia August Wilson Theatre - NY Tickets Information

The August Wilson Theatre is basically a Broadway theatre and is situated at 245 West 52 nd Street, New York City, America. The design of the building was laid down by two architects, namely Kenneth Franzheim and C. Howard Crane, and the construction of the building was done by the Theatre Guild. The building was opened in the year 1925 and was originally named the Guild Theatre. The first play that the theatre hosted was Caesar and Cleopatra, by George Bernard Shaw. The place once acted as a studio for WOR – Mutual Radio in the year 1943. It then went on to be purchased by the American National Theater and Academy in the year 1950. The Academy changed the name of the place to the ANTA Theatre. Shortly afterward, the building was sold off again, this time to the Jujamcyn Theaters in the year 1981. The Board member and owner of the Jujamcyn Theaters again changed the name of the place, and this time named it the Virginia Theatre, after her own name, which was Virginia McKnight Binger. After the death of her husband, James H. Binger, she sold off the place to Rocco Landesman, who was the president and producer of the Jujamcyn Theaters.

The current name of the building was decided on the 16 th of October, 2005, fourteen days after the death of August Wilson, who was an outstanding American playwright. The theatre was named after him, in order to appreciate his contribution to American theater. The theatre plays host to many Broadway plays, after the popularity of the Jersey Boys.
