The historic Vaught-Hemingway Stadium is an outdoor stadium in Oxford, Mississippi. It is located on the southeast side of the University of Mississippi campus. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field of the Ole Miss Rebels football team.
The stadium is named for the late Judge William Hemingway (1869-1937). He was the professor of law and longtime chairman of the University's Committee on Athletics. On October 16, 1982, John Howard Vaught’s name was added to the stadium. It was a matter of great pride for him.Vaught compiled an impressive 190-61-11 record as head football coach at Ole Miss and brought the Rebels their first National Championship in 1960.
It was a federally-sponsored project and its construction was started in 1915. Stadium capacity was originally listed at 24,000.The stadium have expanded gradually due to a series of expansions and renovations.
Also, in 1950, came the addition of one of the nation's longest press boxes (80 yards). Astroturf was installed on the playing surface in 1970, making the stadium the only one in Mississippi with an artificial surface. Blue fiber glass seating was added to the West side stands in 1971 and later added to the East stands in 1973. Permanent aluminum bleachers were installed in both end zones in 1980 to bring the stadium to 41,000.
The astro turf was removed from the playing surface and replaced with prescription athletic turf in the summer of 1984. The stadium received a major facelift during the summer of 1988. It included a new press box, new aluminum sideline seating, restrooms and concession stands, plus a club level section for 700 people. The super quality lights were added to the stadium in the summer of 1990 . A new Sony JumboTron scoreboard/message center was added for the 1997 season.
Equipped with all the modern facilities, it allowed the Rebels to play all of their home games on campus.
Ole Miss used to play many of its big rivalry games at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium prior to the early 1990s.It also included the including the heated feuds with LSU and Mississippi State. The Ole Miss-MSU game, commonly referred to as the Egg Bowl, was held in Jackson every year from 1973 through 1990 before returning to a home-and-home series.
The recent renovation of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium has generated a new excitement in Ole Miss football. The historic stadium, which is located on the southeast side of the University of Mississippi campus, increased its capacity to 60,580 with the recent bowling in of the south end zone. The two-year construction has made Vaught-Hemingway the largest on-campus facility in the state of Mississippi.
This splendid Vaught-Hemingway Stadium is very much popular among the spectators. It has successfully hosted some of the historic and memorable games. Five of the stadium's top 10 crowds - including the top four - came in 1998. To date, the highest attendance at Vaught-Hemingway was 62,552 in November 2003. This historic attendance was recorded when the Rebels faced the eventual SEC and national champion LSU Tigers.
