Salle Wilfrid Pelletier Place Des Arts Tickets Information
Salle Wilfrid Pelletier Place Des Arts
The Salle Wilfrid Pelletier is a popular multi-purpose venue for concerts and live performances in Montreal, Canada. The biggest names in entertainment perform at the Salle Wilfrid Pelletier year round. It is part of the cultural complex, the Place des Arts.
Located in the eastern part of the downtown Montreal between Ste-Catherine and de Maisonneuve Streets, and St-Urbain and Jeanne-Mance streets, the Place des Arts was an initiative of Mayor Jean Drapeau, a noted lover of opera, as part of a project to expand the downtown core eastward from the concentration of business and financial activity in the centre-west part of downtown. The Corporation George-Étienne-Cartier, named in honour of George-Étienne Cartier, a Father of Confederation and opera lover, was set up to build it.
Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier was the first part of the complex inaugurated on September 21, 1963. The other theaters of the complex, Théâtre Maisonneuve, Théâtre Jean-Duceppe, Studio-théâtre and Cinquième sale were added progressively. In addition to the theatres, the complex hosts the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal, a museum of contemporary art, as well as rehearsal halls, shops, services, and a large, popular esplanade decorated with original fountains and water cascades. The site is decorated with several works of public art including L'artiste est celui qui fait voir l'autre côté des choses by Claude Bettinger, Comme si le temps… de la rue by Pierre Granche, and La voie lactée by Geneviève Cadieux. In the summer the esplanade and the street in front of it make up one of the important outdoor sites of the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
Before being renamed in honour of the eminent conductor Wilfrid Pelletier, the hall was first known as the Grande Salle ("Grand Theatre"). With a seating capacity of 2,990, the hall features the most state-of-the-art technical equipment and facilities making it an ideal venue for all types of performances and presentations from opera to rock, dance to symphony to musical comedy. Maria Callas, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Charles Aznavour, Luciano Pavarotti, Miles Davis, The Red Army Choir, Ella Fitzgerald ...all have graced the grand stage of Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier.
In addition to the multitude of acclaimed international artists it showcases each year, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier is home to three world renowned resident companies: the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and L'Opéra de Montréal. Before a show or during the intermission show audiences may relax in the foyers located on both the odd- and even-numbered sides of the parterre level. The foyer on each side has a capacity of 450 people and can be used for a reception of 100 people. The area can also accommodate approximately 200 people for conferences or discussions. In addition to many smaller portable bars, Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier has two grand bars (Bar Pellan and Bar Galerie).
During the first few years of Place des Arts’ existence, all the bars in the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier were located in the Bar Pellan, located behind the Piano Nobile. It was named in honor of the artist Alfred Pellan (1906-1988) whose stained-glass mural takes up the entire back wall of the bar. Although, over the years, theatre-goers have preferred the smaller portable bars located in the various foyers, Bar Pellan is still equipped to accommodate 75 people. Located on the 7th floor, the Bar Galerie is equipped to accommodate 75 people on the mezzanine and balcony levels.
Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier is equipped with the audio system for hearing-impaired. However, Members of the audience wishing to avail themselves of this service must bring their own digital receivers spectators. Also, a member of the reception staff is specifically designated to assist persons with reduced mobility during the shows.
In view of the large theater goers, Place des Arts’ has 1,040 underground parking spaces. The underground lot provides safe and covered access to the halls. The entrance to the parking lots is located at 1450 Saint Urbain Street. Parking is also available for people with reduced mobility via the underground passage at 150 de Maisonneuve Boulevard West.
In addition to the current five theaters in the complex, construction of a new concert hall for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra (Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal) is set to be completed by 2011 at the cost of $105 million (CAD) and will seat approximately 1,900 spectators. All the various facilities are connected by an underground mall, also linked to Place-des-Arts metro station to the north and the Complexe Desjardins to the south as part of the Underground City.
