Reliant Stadium is a famous football stadium in Houston, Texas. Houston Texans of the NFL and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo use this stadium as their home. This outstanding stadium has the honor of hosting Super Bowl XXXVIII on February 1, 2004 in which the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers, 32-29. The stadium also hosted The 2002 and 2005 Big 12 conference championship football games. College Football's Texas Bowl and East-West Shrine Game are used to be held at the stadium annually.
The Reliant stadium was opend on August 24, 2002. It has the seating capacity of 69,500.It includes 166 suites and 7,700 club seats. The first row of seats in Reliant Stadium is said to be one of the closest to the field of any NFL stadium.
Reliant Stadium contains a retractable roof. It has the distinction of being the first stadium in the NFL to have this facility. Its Teflon-coated fiberglass fabric roof consists of two large panels that meet and part at the 50 yard line. Reliant Stadium's roof can open or close in about 10 minutes to adapt to possible threats of inclement weather. The panels slide on tracks and sit above the end zones.
The first game in the stadium was played on August 24, 2002 in which the Texans played the Miami Dolphins in their first preseason game. However, the first regular season game was played on September 8 of the same year when the expansion Texans defeated the Dallas Cowboys in an upset.
Reliant Stadium also hosted a historic tribute concert to the late pop star Selena featuring celebrity performers such as Gloria Estefan, Thalia, Paulina Rubio, and Ana Gabriel. Reliant Stadium also regularly hosts events such as Monster Jam and Disney on Ice. In 2005, the 32nd annual State Farm Bayou Classic, a Southwestern Athletic Conference college football tradition, was relocated to Reliant Stadium from New Orleans following the damage of Hurricane Katrina.
Reliant Stadium is part a collection of venues, which are collectively called, Reliant Park. The Reliant Park complex includes Reliant Arena, Reliant Astrodome, Reliant Center, and Reliant Stadium.
The joint efforts of the largest Rodeo in the world and Houston Texans owner Bob McNair were instrumental in getting Reliant Stadium constructed. This marvelous stadium was constructed at a cost of $449 million.
In 2000, Reliant Energy paid $300 million to purchase naming rights to the entire complex for 32 years.
The 2006 inaugural Texas Bowl for NCAA Football also used Reliant Stadium as their home. The first-ever Texas Bowl in December 2006 featured an excellent game between Rutgers University and Kansas State University. The Rutgers came out as victorious with the final score, 37-10.
During the American tour of FC Barcelona, Reliant Stadium's attendence record was set. Barcelona was successful in drawing 4-4 with Club América. They scored three goals in only ten minutes.
