Petersen Events Center
The John M. and Gertrude E. Petersen Events Center or better know as the Petersen Events Center or 'The Pete' is a 12,508-seat versatile arena built on the grounds of the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, popular for hosting the men's and women's Pitt Panthers basketball teams.
Opened in 2002 on part of the ex- site of Pitt Stadium, the arena housed the university's football team from 1925 - 1999. The Pitt basketball program makes its home here, moving over from Fitzgerald Field House. After the creation of the new building, Pitt no longer had to play certain games at the Civic Arena, due to its bigger and better capacity to manage crowds for rivalry matchups.
The Petersen Events Center's plaza is also the location of one of the campus' Panther statues and the previous location of Pitt Stadium. The University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine, Scaife Hall, and the Thomas E. Starzl Biomedical Science Tower can be seen being revealed in the Pete's glass frontage. The first event held here was a Counting Crows concert. For concerts, the Center has 9,000 seats for end-stage shows, around 14,763 for center-stage shows.
The arena includes 16,000 square feet of lobby space, 18 luxury suites, comprising of five courtside luxury suites and a 193-seat Super Suite.
Nicknamed as "The Pete", "The Gerty", and the strident student section inside is known as the "Oakland Zoo." Oakland is the neighborhood where Pitt and "The Pete" are positioned.
The "Oakland Zoo" is made up of the sections across from the team benches and subsequent to the court. The students in the Zoo wear gold T-shirts with the words "Oakland Zoo" in some way, shape or form across the front. This arrangement and unanimity is a large feature behind the Pete being a tough place to play for opposing teams. In reality, Pitt has lost only one home non-conference game since the Panthers moved into the Pete.
In 2006, Sports Illustrated reviewed that the Big East Conference's basketball players and the Pete became famous as the "Toughest Place to Play," with explicit players mentioning the Oakland Zoo and the fans' resourcefulness. In 2007, "The Pete" hosted first and second round games of the NCAA Women's Division I Tournament.
John Petersen is a resident of Erie, Pennsylvania and is the retired President and CEO of Erie Insurance Group.
The high-tech Petersen Events Center is emblematic, representing a bold new era in the history of the University of Pittsburgh. The center is situated at the peak of the upper campus, with a spectacular view of Oakland and the Cathedral of Learning. After its completion in the spring of 2002, the Petersen Events Center has been serving the Panthers basketball team in the best possible way, ever provided.
The venue, which has been endowed with a $10 million gift, the largest individual gift in University history, from alumnus John Petersen and his wife, Gertrude, is one of the optimum college basketball arenas in the country, giving out remarkable services to both players and fans.
Moreover, the Petersen Events Center significantly augments the excellence of student life on campus, offering the University with a site suitable for graduation ceremonies, recreational and fitness facilities, and other campus and community events.
