Goodman Theatre Tickets Information

The Goodman Theatre was built in 1925 to commemorate the life and works of Chicago’s very own Kenneth Sawyer Goodman , a playwright. Goodman, who died as a result of influenza during the 1918 Great Influenza Pandemic, had been the true son of Chicago and made the city proud because of his work. It was actually Goodman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William O. Goodman who with the donation of $250,000 established a school of drama and a professional repertory company at the Art Institute of Chicago. The first theatrewas built by Howard Van Doren Shaw , but it was not well received by the patrons since it had restricted space for effects and scenery and had less than good acoustic system.

The Theatreopened its doors in October, 1925 and presented three plays of Goodman; The Game of Chess , The Green Scarf , and Back of the Yards . However these plays were not for general public and the theatre’s doors opened for them when The Forest by John Galsworthy was presented.Due to space and poor acoustics, the Theatre moved to its present location in 2000. Presently, the Goodman Theatre has two state of the art auditoriums, named after two members of the Goodman family (Owen and Albert), which to date remains one of the biggest donors. A gift from distant cousin of Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, Albert Ivar Goodmanand his mother Edie Appleton, ensured that the new Theatre would continue to carry the name of Goodman. These donations have helped the management of the Theatre to present some of the best productions to its patrons.

The Theatre, off course, could have not done so great without the hard work of its staff, chief amongst them the artistic director. Robert Falls has been the Goodman’s artistic director since 1986. Thanks to Falls relentless efforts the Theatrehas been able to present scores of world premiers and many of its production have been transferred to other theatres in the United States and beyond. As soon as Falls took over the reins, he started to collaborate with actor Brian Dennehy with his production of Galileo . Ever since, the two have further collaborated on productions like Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Death of a Salesman . Both of them were so well done that they won the prestigious Tony Award .

Some of the more memorable productions at the Goodman Theatre have been Mary Zimmerman’s The Odyssey , Journey to the West and The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci ; David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre and American Buffalo ; David Petrarca’s The House of Martin Guerre and Marvin’s Room ; Robert Falls’ The Young Man from Atlanta , The Night of the Iguana , and The Iceman Cometh ; Rebecca Gilman’s Dollhouse , Blue Surge , Boy Gets Girl , and Spinning into Butter ; Regina Taylor’s Oo-Bla-Dee and Drowning Crow .

In addition to the abovementioned productions, the Theatre also presents some special productions for its patrons, like Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol . And in order to encourage early appreciation of art amongst the young, the Goodman Theatre started Family Theatre Series in 2001/2002. The objective of this project has always been to introduce youngsters to live performances in child-friendly, playful manner.

Kenneth Sawyer Goodman, who produced, wrote and published scores of plays in non-commercial productions in his beloved city Chicago, had a vision; to create a theatre which combines both highest standards of performance and professional training, an ideal theatre in short. The Goodman Theatre certainly lives up to that dream. To be a part of that dream, buy Goodman Theatre Tickets now!
