Empire Theatre Tickets Information
Empire Theatre
The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre is built on land that was devoted to arts since 1879. This theatre was erected by the Turner Verin Association. It was prviously known by the names: Riche's Opera, the Alhambra Theatre, the Houston Street Theatre, and the Empire Opera House. The venue throughout its existence under the different names has been used for vaudeville, silent and talking motion pictures, concerts and live theatre.
Thomas Brady purchased and reopened the theatre in 1890. Brady operated the theatre in the condition that he purchased it in until 1899. By 1913, Brady built the Empire Theatre on its original site. This structure was erected as a European palazzo. Mauran, Russell & Crow of St. Louis were the architects behind this new building. This new structure was considered to be modern at its time. Also, when it was built, it was the largest theatre in San Antonio. It had excellent acoustics, electric fans, an electric lighting system, and stage equipment for vaudeville, stock theatre, and motion pictures. It was fully carpeted and had grand draperies.
Above the canopied entrance of the theatre, there was a copper eagle with its wings spread out. It symbolized a call to patrons to San Antonio's most charming theatres. The walls of this theatre were decorated plaster moldings, free form leaves, maidens, masks, ornamental medallions, and floral detail. These were artistically painted with metallic powders or they were gilded with 23 carat gold leafing.
During the 1921 flood, the Empire theatre was at risk. 9 feet of water had poured into it and caused damage to the gilded interior. Instead of restoring the ornamentation to its original color palette, this damage was camouflaged using layers of thick, white paint.
The Empire Theater started to decline slowly, and eventually was closed down in 1978. A decade later, the City of San Antonio purchased the decaying theatre. With the Las Casas Foundation efforts, funds had been raised in order to restore the Empire Theatre to its original standard.
During the theatre’s prime days, some of America's best stage performers made appearances. Silent movies featured stars such as Lon Chaney and Charlie Chaplin during the 1920s. These were among the favorites of the Empire patrons. When talking motion pictures emerged, huge crowds attended them regularly. Even the Great Depression could not slow the business of the Empire, as 15,000 viewers poured into the theatre in week's time to view Mae West's "Belle of the 90's." Among the live acts at this time were Gene Autry and Roy Rogers with Trigger.
Artists that have performed at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre and made it a success since 1998 include David Crosby, Don McLean, Shawn Colvin, Gato Barbieri and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
