Cypress Gardens Adventure Park
Setting the stage for the rise of tourism in central Florida Cypress Gardens Adventure Park-- formerly known as Cypress Gardens-- is Florida's first theme park. Located near Winter Haven, Florida, it has been quite a hit with celebrities and dignitaries who have skied and visited at the park, including Elvis Presley, Jordan's former King Hussein and his son and predecessor, King Abdullah II. Many of the sport's landmark "firsts" and over 50 world records were broken here which has established its place as the Water Ski Capital of the World. Numerous movies have been filmed at the park, including a string of Esther Williams films and TV specials in the 50's and 60's. It was also the site of a Johnny Carson special.
Planted by Dick and Julie Pope, Cypress Gardens opened on January 2, 1936 as a botanical garden but over the years it became one of the biggest attractions in Florida, known for its water ski shows and Southern Belles.
Due to the opening of Walt Disney World Resort nearby in 1971, the number of people visiting the park decreased quite a lot. After a decade the park along with SeaWorld, Circus World (later rebuilt as Boardwalk & Baseball) and Stars Hall of Fame was sold to some book publishers who further sold most of the businesses to Anheuser-Busch in 1989. over the next ten or more years the park went through a succession of owners until finally in February 2004, Adventure Parks Group, owned by Kent Buescher, purchased the property and renamed it Cypress Gardens Adventure Park. It reopened after a nine month delay due to damages created by hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne. One of its new attractions, the Triple Hurricane roller coaster, was named after the storm season. The adjacent Splash Island water park opened in 2005, along with the Galaxy Spin roller coaster. In September 2006, Adventure Parks Group filed for bankruptcy protection following approximately $30 million in damages sustained by the 2004 hurricanes but kept its operations running without interruption during the bankruptcy reorganization.
Cypress Gardens is also host to the TV series "Eye on Gardening," by international gardening expert Tim Alan. The show airs weekly coast to coast exclusively on iLifeTV Digital Cable Network, and Worldwide in Europe on Inspiration Network International B Sky B and Hotbird 6 Satellite Programming.
