Home of the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association and the Indiana Fever of the Women's National Basketball Association, Conseco Fieldhouse is a popular sports arena with a traditional look to it. Located in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA the arena is also used for a few games each year by the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League as their home. The Fieldhouse has a great downtown location, just a short distance from the RCA Dome in the city's historic warehouse district on Pennsylvania and Georgia streets with all the nighttime activities, restaurants and bars that downtown Indianapolis has to offer nearby.
On November 6, 1999 Conseco Fieldhouse replaced Market Square Arena as the home of the Indiana Pacers. In 2002, Conseco Fieldhouse served as one of two sites for the FIBA Men's World Basketball Championship, sharing the honors with RCA Dome. The venue has hosted three Big Ten Conference Men's basketball tournaments (2002, 2004, and 2006). Conseco also hosted the 2004 FINA short course World Swimming Championships. A 25 meter 300,000 gallon competition pool and 175,000 gallon warm-up pool were temporarily installed. On October 11th, 2004 a record was set for the largest attendance at a U.S. Swimming event outside of the Olympics with 11,488 people.
The arena is designed after Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University and the other great fieldhouses that covered the state of Indiana with standing room only crowds on Friday nights in the formative years of high school basketball. It is notable for being the first modern "retro"-styled facility in the NBA. The fieldhouse is a veritable museum to the rich heritage that is Indiana basketball. No other arena connects the past and the present the way Conseco does. From the front entrance to the court, the throwback building is full of charm.
The first thing that catches your eye in the arena lobby is the glass showcase that documents the history of basketball in Indiana, targeting mainly the Pacers. Pictures of prominent Pacers line the walls of the concourse, with the player's career stats and a brief biography. Blown-up pictures of old newspaper clippings line the walls. The most interesting account in one of the clippings is about the longest NBA game played, between the Rochester Royals and Indianapolis Olympians on Jan. 6, 1951. The game went six overtimes — 78 minutes long. Final: Royals, 75-73. There’s also an Indy 500 tribute, complete with a race car simulator video screen. Another tip to the past is the out-of-town hand operated scoreboard.
There is a large Starbucks right at the entrance to the arena, and several small bakery stands, cocktail bars and deli stands (with good deli sandwiches). Concessions are mostly franchised; for example, Dominos but there is also other variety, as the club level is open to all and has a wider variety of choice, other than the standard hot dog, nachos and beer.
Besides sports, other entertainment events such as concerts are frequently scheduled there. The arena provides a snug feel, with fast-rising seats that overhang on two levels, giving the feel of being close to the court — even in the third level. However, if you plan to attend a concert at the Fieldhouse, and it's someone you really have been waiting to see, then spend a few more bucks and get a seat in the lower level as the sound quality on the top level is not that great. Wheelchair seating is available at different levels in numerous different price ranges; all restrooms are fully accessible; and assisted listening devices and sign language interpreters are available for events.
According to the Sports Business Journal/Sports Business Daily Reader Survey in 2005, 2006, and 2007 Conseco Fieldhouse was ranked the No. 1 venue in the NBA. In 2006 Conseco Fieldhouse once again withstood scrutiny to be named the “best of the best” in the four major sports by The Ultimate Sports Road Trip; “Everything about Conseco Fieldhouse is top notch, a sparkling venue in a sparkling city.”
In the future Conseco Fieldhouse plans to host Ten Conference Men's basketball tournaments for 5 straight years starting in 2008.
