Charleston Civic Center
Located in the downtown area of Charleston, West Virginia, the Charleston Civic Center is the entertainment and convention centerpiece, hosting the majority of the state's premier entertainment, sporting and corporate events. The Charleston Civic Center is comprised of four versatile venues: the Civic Center Coliseum, the Municipal Auditorium, the Civic Center Little Theater and the Charleston Convention Center.
The original Civic Center opened in January 1959 at the cost of $2.5 million bond issue approved by Charleston voters. At the time it consisted of a 6,000-seat arena and the 750-seat "Little Theater" where The Charleston Light Opera Guild conducts performances throughout the year.
The first major expansion and renovation project costing $1.8 million was initiated in 1968, whereby the Civic Center expanded, with the addition of an ice arena and 2,400 seats to the arena. A decade later, financed by a federal grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development and a $10 million bond issue approved by Charleston voters, construction again began on a $19 million expansion, to create a 13,000-seat new coliseum and a two-story lobby, wrapped around the original arena and theater. The existing Civic Center was turned into a convention center featuring meeting rooms, exhibit halls and major banquet facilities. The project was completed in 1980.
At present, the renovated grand hall boasts 36,000 square feet of floor space, which can be halved by 50-ton moveable wall that descends from the ceiling. The new coliseum has a seating capacity of up to 13,500 for in-the-round events, 12,500 for basketball games, and more than 10,000 for stage shows and circuses. In 1983 two parking garages were added which can accommodate up to 1,300 cars.
The Civic Center's meeting rooms and larger spaces including the coliseum have been host to all kinds of events, children's shows, concerts, graduations, ice shows, musicals, circuses, expos, conferences, political events and religious conventions. Popular local annual events and fairs that are held here throughout the year include Annual West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show, West Virginia Association of Fairs & Festivals Conference, West Virginia International Auto Show, West Virginia Sports Show, the Taste of Charleston, and the Capital City Arts & Crafts Fair.
Additionally, The Civic Center Coliseum also hosts the semifinals and finals of the annual West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference postseason tournament, WVSSAC High School Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments, professional wrestling, and basketball games between in-state rivals West Virginia University and Marshall University.
