BI-LO Center
Located at 650 N Academy Street in the heart of downtown Greenville, South Carolina the BI-LO Center is the largest multi-purpose sports and entertainment arena. The entertainment industry has consistently recognized the BI-LO Center as one of the top 50 venues in the world. The venue is designed to accommodate 14,200 patrons for hockey, 15,400 patrons for basketball, and 16,600 patrons for a center stage concert.
The BI-LO Center hosted first and second round games during the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. College basketball made its return to Greenville in 2005, when the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament was played at the BI-LO Center. The arena has also served as the home for the Greenville Groove (2001-2003), one of the original members of the NBA Development League, as well as the Carolina Rhinos football team (2000-2002), one of the inaugural members of af2, the Arena Football League's minor league, as well as the Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL (1998-2006), hosting the 2002 Kelly Cup Finals.
Currently, the BI-LO Center also regularly hosts a wide variety of events such as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, professional wrestling, monster truck rallies, motocross racing, professional ice skating, such as the Champions on Ice, and ice dancing shows and competitions, dog shows, and concerts spanning many different musical genres.
Greenville, South Carolina, had been trying to build a new sports and entertainment facility for over 20 years to replace its existing facility, the Greenville Memorial Auditorium. With an approximate seating capacity of 6,200, that venue was outdated and inadequate to meet the demands of the current market. Community leaders sought out Mr. Carl Scheer as a private developer for the project. His background in NBA management, minor league hockey, and sports pro-motion was ideally suited to the task of putting together this project for the community. The community leaders then assisted Mr. Scheer in building a coalition among his company, Scheer-Sports, the Greenville Memorial Auditorium District, The City of Greenville, and Greenville County to develop a joint funding plan for the project. This public-private venture included state funding, increase in the local accommodations tax, the existing county tax allocated to the Memorial Auditorium, suite and club seat revenues, and private sponsorship pack-ages.
Finally, in 1998 the BI-LO Center was built at a cost of US$63 million. Odell Associates, Inc. was selected to design the new arena based on its experience with other similarly sized sports buildings in similar markets. The arena was named for BI-LO, a regional grocery store chain operating 226 supermarkets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. This regional store chain paid for the arena's naming rights.
Designed by Odell Associates, Inc. (which had experience with other similarly sized sports buildings in similar markets) the exterior skin of the building is comprised of a two-story brick base that was designed to match the scale of the existing buildings along Main Street in the adjacent central business district. Large sections of tinted glass curtain wall are used at major entrances to highlight the activities in the building and provide orientation to building patrons. A ribbon of clerestory glass is used to provide natural light to the main concourse.
The Bi-Lo Center has 30 private suites and over 600 club seats. The suites, which have either 12 or 16 seats, are all served from the main concourse of this single concourse building. They provide excellent views of the events approximately 23 rows up from the floor. The club lounge, located at the stage end of the arena, provides a gathering place for suite and club seat holders before, during and after events. The BI-LO Center is a Centerplate managed facility which provides world class food and beverage to the venue as well as to some of the other most prominent venues in North America.
The most convenient parking facility is the Church St. Garage located at 320 N. Church Street adjacent to the BI-LO Center. The parking lot on Church Street is reserved for BI-LO Center Premium Seating and Suite owners. Private lots are also available within walking distance. Parking prices for private lots are determined by each of the property owner. For guests with disabilities, the BI-LO Center is equipped with four public accessible seating areas located in the four corners of the arena at sections 100A, 116B, 105B, and 111A. In addition, there are individual seats in the upper level seating and floor seating when applicable. All concession stands on the concourse Level have counters that meet ADA regulations. Additionally the restrooms, elevators and parking areas all have easy access. Assistive listening devices/hearing assistance is available as well.
The facility has enjoyed phenomenal success in its early events and has become one of the hottest new venues in the country. At present The BI-LO Center offers the ultimate atmosphere for sports, concerts, and family shows, as well as corporate and community events.
