Avalon Hollywood Tickets Information
Avalon Hollywood
Situated just north of the renowned intersection of Hollywood and Vine, Avalon Hollywood is a classic, world-famous music and entertainment venue. Formerly the historic Palace theatre, Avalon Hollywood has the feel of both classic and contemporary. The venue offers a large main dance floor with two opposing bars and an exclusive upstairs lounge and intimate dance area known as the Spider Club. Regular dance club events along with plenty of touring music acts are featured here.
The origins of the venue date back to 1927. Designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style by the architectural firm of Gogarty and Weyl, Avalon Hollywood was then known as The Hollywood Playhouse. It was one of Los Angeles' first and most lavish legitimate theatres. As the excitement and glamour of the 20s passed into the Great Depression years of the '30s, the theatre continued to present contemporary drama under the patronage of the government-sponsored Works Progress Administration, thus renaming the building The WPA Federal Theatre. Later, the theatre hosted numerous CBS Radio Network programs, including Fanny Brice's Baby Snooks show and Lucille Ball's My Favorite Husband program.
With the dawning of the '40s the venue was renamed as The El Capitan and the building opened with "Ken Murray's Blackouts," a live variety/burlesque show which played 3,844 performances--a record that has remained unbroken since 1949.
In 1963, the building was dubbed The Jerry Lewis Theatre as ABC television used 1735 Vine to house the comedian's weekly ABC-TV variety series. When the program failed, ABC raised a more classic title onto the marquee, The Hollywood Palace, and launched its hit "Hollywood Palace" series featuring show business greats--from Judy Garland to Louis Armstrong. After the cancellation of this series in 1970, the name lived on and ABC continued to use the building as a studio for occasional broadcasts.
In 1978 a local businessman purchased the property from ABC and after four years of planning, restoration and massive refurbishing, the theatre opened once again as The Palace. Rebuilt as a multimedia facility, The Palace became the consummate concert venue and nightclub in town. The '90s brought a new owner and its stage played a role in the ever-evolving music scene. Some of the current big names performed multiple nights to kick off their world tours. The venue also hosted many movie premiere and wrap parties, industrial events and awards shows.
In 2002 it was purchased by Hollywood Entertainment Partners and became Avalon Hollywood. Under them, the building has hosted the American Music Awards and was once home to The Colgate Comedy Hour, the Lawrence Walk Show, and This is Your Life.
Today, Avalon Hollywood is ideal for live concerts, awards show, fashion shows, & film screenings with its state-of the art lighting & sound systems.
