Aragon Ballroom Tickets Information
The Aragon Ballroom
Chicago's famous North side night spot, The Aragon, opened in 1926 on West Lawrence Avenue with the "King of Jazz", Paul Whiteman and his orchestra. It was an instant success and so remained a popular Chicago attraction through the 1940s. Crowds often exceeded 18,000 guests over the six open nights each week. Powerhouse radio station WGN broadcast an hour-long program from the hall each night to radio audiences throughout the Midwestern United States and Canada.
At the time, The Aragon was dubbed the most beautiful ballroom in the world because of its design which was a remarkable replica of a Spanish palace courtyard with its crystal chandeliers, mosaic tiles, garishly painted plaster, terra-cotta ceiling and beautiful arches. Because of its close proximity to public transportation, large crowds (many out of towners) used to arrive at The Aragon to dance.
For artists, playing at the Aragon became a status symbol as it hosted nearly all of the top names of the big band era. Acts like Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Welk, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, Dick Jurgens, Harry James, Xavier Cugat, Eddy Duchin, Carmen Cavallaro, Kay Kyser, George Olsen, Benny Goodman, Sammy Kaye, Art Kassel, Artie Shaw, Ted Fio Rito, Jan Garber, Frankie Masters, Russ Morgan, Orrin Tucker, Griff Williams, and many more frequented the Aragon.
In 1958 Aragon closed for several months after being severely damaged due to a fire at the adjacent Normandy Cocktail Lounge. Though it reopened soon but couldn’t attract many audiences. After that the Aragon went through a couple of new owners and was used for many purposes such as roller skating rink, a boxing venue, a discothèque, and a concert venue.
At present, the hall is more popularly known as Aragon Entertainment Center. Its interior appears to be a palace of illusions with its artificial stars overhead and projectors beam clouds scudding across the domed roof some 60 feet above the dance floor. The hall hosts a variety of Spanish language shows as well as English language rock concerts including acts like Muse, Slayer, Morrissey, The Mars Volta, Snow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand (band) and many more.
All the big names of the past that have played here make the Aragon Ballroom an important part of American music history.
