The Allstate Arena is a sports arena in Rosemont, Illinois. The Arena is located at the intersection of Mannheim Road and Interstate 90, adjacent to O'Hare International Airport. The Chicago Wolves hockey club, DePaul University men's basketball, and the Chicago Rush Arena football team use this outstanding arena as their home venue.
The Rosemont Horizon was the original name of the Allstate Arena and it was intended to be the home of the WHA Chicago Cougars. But the franchise closed in 1975. Meeting the finance for the construction of the arena was matter of serious concern. The Village of Rosemont was able to finance the cost of the arena by issuing $19 million in bonds with exclusive contracts with Araserv, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and MFG International. The Arena saw a tragic incident on August 13, 1979 when the uncompleted roof of the Rosemont Horizon collapsed. Five construction workers were killed and 16 others were injured.
Estimated damages caused by the collapse was $3 million. The roof was later rebuilt to specifications by a different contractor, and the arena was completed.
Allstate Insurance Company spent $20 million in 1999 for the renovation of the arena and gaining its naming rights.
The Allstate Arena has become a Midwestern cornerstone for the WWE. It has the honor of hosting the major WWE events. WrestleMania 2 and WrestleMania 13 and WrestleMania 22 were held at this arena. WWE No Mercy is scheduled to be held at this arena in 2007.
The Arena also hosted many other prestigious events. These include Survivor Series 1989, WWE Judgment Day 1998, WWE Backlash 2001, and the very first WWF pay-per-view event, The Wrestling Classic.
In 1994, The arena hosted the first WCW Spring Stampede. The Great Midwest Conference men’s basketball tournament was held at the Allstate Arena the same year. The arena has successfully hosted the NCAA basketball tournament three times: the 1987 and 1993 Midwest Regional first and second round games, and the 2005 Chicago Regional Finals.
