Our favorite characters are now performing live on stage; spookier, creepier, stranger and of course more entertaining than ever! Based on Charles Addams’ cartoons by the same name, The Addams Family has been amusing millions all over the world for a long period of time and the gothic, macabre family now brings to us a musical that completely does justice to the original cartoon. The musical is definitely something unique after a television series, cartoons, movies and even video games. You know you have to go watch it not only because you love them but because ‘they’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re altogether ooky, they’re the Addams Family’!

The Addams Family has an extremely entertaining and unique story in which everyone finds them frightening and strange but the family is completely unaware of this. They feel their macabre interests are normal for everyone else as well and don’t see how they themselves are different from the rest. The Addams is a close knit family, headed by Morticia Addams who is extremely witty and gothic in demeanor. She is happily married to her loving husband Gomez Addams, an energetic and enthusiastic man. They have two children, Pugsley and Wednesday. Wednesday is a straight faced, serious girl with several pet spiders and a strong affinity for injuring/killing her brother Pugsley. Pugsley considers his sister’s attempts to kill him as all fun and games, as the whole family takes pleasure in pain. Grandma Frump and Uncle Fester live with the family and they are all the only remaining branch of the entire Addams lineage. Despite their morbid interest, the family isn’t evil and is, instead, extremely hospitable, friendly and generous.
The Broadway representation of The Addams Family has made a few changes to the storyline and is more or less the same as the original. While Pugsley is still a young child in it, Wednesday’s age has been increased to 18 and the family has been located inside Central Park. The story revolves around a dinner that the family is hosting for Wednesday’s boyfriend and his ‘normal’ family. The musical walks us through it all as the house is turned upside down, with Gomez upset about his daughter growing up and Mortcia upset about growing old. The characters are played out perfectly well by extremely experienced actors. Roger Rees has taken on Gomez’s role, the beautiful Brooke Shields is playing Moticia, Rachel Potter is playing Wednesday, Brad Oscar is playing Uncle Fester, Adam Riegler is playing Pugsley, Jackie Hoffman is playing grandmother and Zachary James is starring as Lurch. The story is, of course, brought to life by directors Julian Crouch and Phelim Mcd ermott. And lastly, the play obviously wouldn’t have been this brilliant without the choreography by Sergio Trujillo .
Although, it is slightly different from the original storyline, The Addams Family is still an extremely entertaining family show. The fact that Michelle Obama came down with her two daughters to watch it, speaks scores for the quality of performance that was put up. It truly makes us say that the Addams Family is ‘neat, sweet and petite’, as goes the soundtrack. All in all, the musical is a must watch, regardless of whether or not you’re a theatre fan.
