Peter Pan Tickets Information
Peter Pan
Peter Pan is a renowned play that was written by a Scottish writer, J. M. Barrie. Peter Pan was presented for the first time on stage at the Duke of York's Theatre [December 27 1904]. In 1911, the writer of Peter Pan novelized it. It was called Peter Pan and Wendy.
The Story of Peter Pan:
Peter Pan is a story about a mischievous boy who literally refuses to grow up. He is skilled swordfighter, who spends his time adventuring on the island of Neverland. He is leader of the Lost Boys.
The story of Peter Pan characterizes some fantastical elements, and one of them is Peter’s ability to fly. Other important characters in the play include his friends, and a fairy named Tinker Bell. Captain Hook is also an important character in the play.
Background:
Barrie wrote Peter Pan for story telling to his friend’s children. He became a good friend of Sylvia Llewelyn Davies’ children by doing this.
Barrie chose the main character’s name because of Peter Llewelyn Davies, his friend’s son’s name, and also because of the mischievous Greek god of the woodlands. Mrs. Llewelyn Davies died of cancer, just a few years after her husband passed away. Barrie then unofficially adopted them.
It is speculated that the concept of Peter Pan was inspired from Barrie's elder brother David, who died in a skating accident at 13. His mother severely affected by this. Andrew Birkin, the author of J.M. Barrie and the Lost Boys, says the death was a catastrophe beyond belief, and one from which she never fully recovered… If Margaret Ogilvy [Barrie's mother as the heroine of his 1896 novel of that title] drew a measure of comfort from the notion that David, in dying a boy, would remain a boy for ever, Barrie drew inspiration.
Adaptations of Peter Pan:
There have been many adaptations of Peter Pan for stage and screen. Peter Pan is mostly played by an adult female. This follows the original that had a female playing the part. It can be noted that in those days, adults had to play children’s roles in plays, as there were laws against children performing in the evenings.
In 1924, Paramount Pictures produced a first film version of Peter Pan. This was a silent movie that starred Betty Bronson as Peter, and Ernest Torrence as Captain Hook.
Stage Actors in the first stage Adaptation:
The first stage adaption was held at the Duke of York's Theatre, London [December 27, 1904]. Gerald du Maurier acted as Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, and Nina Boucicault played Peter.
In 1928, there was a stage adaptation of Peter Pan played in New York City. This was held by the Civic Repertory Theater between November 1928 and December 1928.
On TV:
A 1954 stage version was re-created for TV by NBC. This version was produced as a live color television event.
Animated feature:
Disney produced its animated film version of Peter Pan in February 5, 1953. This had music by Frank Churchill, Sammy Fain,Sammy Cahn, and Ted Sears. The voice for Peter Pan was done by 15-year-old Bobby Driscoll, a young film actor. In this film version, Peter is depicted as an absent minded person. This ties him to a Pan of Greek mythology. The character also played the Pan pipes, which this nature spirit was recognized for playing.
