La Cage Aux Folles Tickets

Performing arts today do not get the amount of attention that it used to. Technology while being a boon for society has been the bane for other things. Theatre and musicals which have been entertaining people for centuries are now more and more in the back seat with cinema taking over. With high budget productions, impressive CGI and the next generation of three dimensional technology cinemas provide a much more attractive incentive for most people than the traditional theatre. Theatre appears to have retained a select following now, one that enjoy it as an art form, not as a source of some light hearted entertainment. Yet the strength of plays and musicals is that they combine the depth of philosophy and plot with the entertainment elements and can thus cater to any sort of audience whether they crave for plots and lessons or just watch for entertainment purposes. There have been many successful musicals that have worked at churning out the right formula and the La Cage aux Folles tickets will give you the chance to watch one of the most celebrated musicals of our time.

La Cage Aux Folles Tickets Information

La Cage aux Folles is the amalgamation of the creative input of musical director and lyricist Jerry Herman, and writer Harvey Fierstein. The musical is based upon a French play that premiered in 1973 and was written by Jean Poiret. The plot revolves around a gay couple, Albin and Georges. The latter is the manager in a night club and gets into a fix when his son brings his fiancée’s parents for a visit, who are extremely conservative. La Cage aux Folles made its debut on Broadway in 1983 when the original production was held. The musical turned out to be massive success as it had a lengthy tenure on Broadway and made its way to theatres internationally as well. During this time the musicals popularity resulted in nine Tony Award nominations and La Cage aux Folles took home six including the categories “Best Musical”, along with “Best Book” and the “Best Score”.
Even when the musical ceased to be performed its popularity was at such a scale that it was revived three times. The first was the La Cage aux Folles Broadway revival in 2004 at the Marquis Theatre and the musical again made its way into the winners at the Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Awards. The second revival took place in 2008 in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory and later at West End. Even in England the musical continued to build up on its wave of popularity and was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for the category “Best Musical Revival”. The musical also received an award for “Best Actor” for Douglas Hodge who was playing Albin and in total earned nominations in seven categories. The third time the musical was revived on popular demand was in 2010 at Broadway again. The Longacre Theatre held the first previews in which Douglas Hodge reprised his role with a collection of old faces and new. The musical did superbly again and was nominated for a total of eleven awards and managed to take home three including “Best Musical Revival”, “Best Direction of a Musical” and “Best Actor in a Musical” again for Douglas Hodge.
Such an amazingly successful run is something that few musicals enjoy and is a testament to the strength of the story, the skill of the actors and just as importantly for the songs which help set the ambience for the story. La Cage aux Folles is hence definitely not a musical to miss especially for people who have not managed to get a chance to watch it before. Its high entertainment value has been praised by the media and the revivals have been termed as a classic reborn.
The widespread appeal and critical acclaim that the musical has gained has also led to a renewed run on the international scene. La Cage aux Folles has had foreign language productions in countries as diverse as Australia, to Brazil, to Italy and Russia to Korea. In all these countries the productions have been quite successful and are still running in many of them. Even though the original cast of the 1983 production does not perform anymore yet the new actors have done complete justice to this classic and has made it one of the must watch musicals out there. So get your La Cage aux Folles tickets now and experience the classic for yourself.
