The stage production was lively and astonishing for its use of live animals, which included chickens, a tortoise, goldfish and several real trees. Jerusalem is a directorial success from Ian Rickson, and starred the likes of Mark Rylance, Mackenzie Crook, Alan David, Tom Brooke, Danny Kirrane, Gerard Horan, Barry Sloane and , Aimee-Ffion Edwards. Fans of theater will surely enjoy Jerusalem because its another proof of just how much of a revival theater has seen recently, with great new productions coming along like Wicked and Lion King and rerenditions of more classical plays, instead of just reperforming old plays as they were. Audiences once again flock to theater because it really is nothing like any other entertainment experience around. The theater has an entirely different feel from a cinema, or the sports arena or any other type of entertainment; it is a feeling entirely unique to the art of theater. No longer a pursuit of older people, younger and younger audiences the world over have begun to enjoy going to the theater to not just indulge in the comedies but also the more serious plays being produced. Jerusalem is surely a testament to the level of good quality theatrical work being done these days and is definitely worth seeing.

This original production got rave reviews from The Times, Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail, saying things like “ an invigorating, yelping, defiant portrait of 21st century shires England” and ” this rich three-hour play is also tender, touching, and blessed with both a ribald humor and a haunting sense of the mystery of things”. After the Apollo, Jerusalem enjoyed another successful limited season of 12 weeks in West End in 2010. This two was a roaring success for the play, though it received its first negative review here which came from Tim Walker of the Sunday Telegraph, who claimed that the character of Rooster is a bore and to spend the duration of the play in his company a “test of endurance”. Rylance went on to win Best Actor Olivier Award for his role as Rooster, which had been on the receiving end of Tim Walker’s critique. Following the West End run, the play opened at Broadway at the Music Box Theater on 21 st April 2011. It was yet again a limited run, to be wound up in July of 2011. With most of the original cast, it’s yet another success for this production.

The story of Jerusalem begins on St George’s Day at the local county fair. Johnny Byron is a wanted man. Described as a pied piper and local waster, the counsel people would love nothing more than to serve the man an eviction notice. Johnny’s son mark wants his dad to take him to this fair but Johnny has his own problems. His friends all want a share of his ample supply of drugs and alcohol and some local thugs are vying to get their hands on him.

Jerusalem has been called a State-of-England play, much like the State-of-Olde-England plays of before. Everyone that has seen Jerusalem applauds the effort to portray a general scene with an eccentric flair that proves to be highly entertaining yet relatable. However, due to some strong language and, which though fitting in the context and the setting, makes the play something for an older audience surely. What more can be said of the caliber of this play if it has not only been a success in the UK but also here in the US?

Jerusalem is a gem of a play, even in the highly well produced other plays that are popping up in this booming revival of the theater around the globe. It stands out on its own merit and relies on a cast of great actors and a brilliant script to really set itself apart. Basic good old-school theater, is what this is!
