It is about two high school students: Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), who is the captain of a basketball team, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens), a timid transfer student who is remarkably well in math and science.
Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical. Even though other students' attempts to shatter their dreams, Troy and Gabriella dont give up easily and thus make their way to victory.
Both first meet at a New Year's Eve party and get chosen to sing for karaoke and develop a wonderful chemistry. They exchange numbers, promising to call each other. After a week, turns out, both attend the same high school, after Gabriella gets transferred to East High in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Troy checks the photo of Gabriella on his cell phone to make sure he has the right person, and ends up getting detained, along with Gabriella, his best friend and teammate Chad Danforth, scholastic decathlon captain Taylor McKessey, and Drama Club co-presidents Ryan and Sharpay Evans.
Troy and Gabriella sign-up sheet for the winter musical auditions. Sharpay and presumes that Gabriella wants to sign up. She and Ryan search for Gabriella Montez on the internet and find that she is an "Einsteinette". They put the article on Gabriella's academic achievements at her previous school into Taylor's locker and he invites her to join the school's scholastic decathlon team.
Troy skips basketball practice during free period to go to the auditions, also attended by Gabriella. When Gabriella finally decides to give it a shot, Troy offers to sing with her, but Ms. Darbus says it is too late.
After an argument with Sharpay, Kelsi Nielsen - the composer of the musical, trips and drops her notes and piano music. Troy and Gabriella rush to help her, who then offers to let them hear how the song "What I've Been Looking For" -- sung Sharpay and Ryan a while ago, was supposed to sound. They sing a slower version of the song. On hearing them, Mrs. Darbus gives them a recall. The next day, Sharpay sees the callback sheet and is furious. Once Chad and all the basketball players find out that Troy skipped basketball practice to audition for the musical, they all are shocked. On learning about this at lunchtime, all the students start confessing their secret desires and talents, including basketball player Zeke Baylor's who has a passion for baking. Gabriella slips and accidentally spills her lunch all over Sharpay's shirt, who is convinced that Troy and Gabriella are trying to destroy the musical.
Chad and Taylor create a plan so that everything can go back to normal. The basketball team tricks Troy into saying that Gabriella isn't important while she watches them through a wi-fi link. Gabriella is hurt and confused and tells troy that she was no longer interested in the musical anymore.
Chad and Taylor, after feeling guilty about ruining Troy and Gabriella's friendship decide to confess. They explain everything to Troy and Gabriella, Gabriella remains angry and hurt because of what Troy said. In attempt to patch-up things between him and Gabriella, Troy goes over to her place inorder persuade her to go to the callbacks with him. Gabriella then forgives him, and they start practicing the callback piece at school together with Kelsi.
On the day itself, Taylor and Gabriella send a code by computer into the system by shutting down the scoreboard to disrupt the basketball game, and boil a dangerous chemical to stop the decathlon. As they rush to the theater, but Ms. Darbus, since called their names twice, she tells them they are too late. In the end, Ms. Darbus gives the parts to Troy and Gabriella. After winning both the scholastic decathlon and the basketball game, the entire school gathers in the gym to celebrate the victory.
