Hairspray

Multiple time Tony and Drama Desk Award winning musical, Hairspray is back once again with same goodness that it always had. Hairspray the musical is based upon a film of same name, by John Waters, which came out earlier in 1988. Starring Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono the movie did pretty well commercially and critically which is why it was adapted as a musical later in 2002. The musical sheds the light on racial segregations during the 1960s America. With Marc Shaiman being the architect of Hairspray’s music and also the co lyricist along with Scott Wittman, Hairspray’s music mostly consists of Downtown styled R&B and Dance music. Hairspray the musical, tells the story of young aspiring dancer Tracy Turnblad who has her eyes set to one goal and one goal only, which happens to be able to dance at The Corny Collins Show in order to show her talent to the world.
Prior to opening the musical on Broadway, the musical was initially tried out at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. After having a successful run at the 5th Avenue Theatre, Hairspray then moved to its home ground on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre on August 15, 2002. With Jack O’Brien as its director, Steve C. Kennedy as its Sound Designer, Jerry Mitchell as its Choreographer and William Ivey Long as its costume designer, Hairspray’s Broadway production proved out to be a huge commercial success. Originally the Broadway production starred Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur who played the lead roles along with Linda Hart, Kerry Butler, Jackie Hoffman, Mary Bond Davis, Clarke Thorell, Laura Bell Bundy, Matthew Morrison, Danelle Eugenia Wilson and Joel Vig. Musical’s original Broadway production kept on attracting hundreds of theatre goers for as long as it ran, and in order to award the musical for its success, it was nominated in 12 Tony Award categories out of which Hairspray managed to take home eight. Among those eight awards was also an award for Best Musical. Hairspray’s original production closed on January 4, 2009 after running for more than six years.
Following the success the musical enjoyed at Broadway, Hairspray crossed seas when it was opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on London’s West End on October 11, 2007 for previews. The official West End run kicked off on October 30 and it starred Mel Smith, Leanne Joes, Michael Ball, Tracie Bennett, Rachael Wooding, Ben James Ellis and Paul Manuel. Apart from that, Jack O’Brien, the director of the original Broadway production, and Jerry Mitchell, the choreographer of the original Broadway production, joined forces once again for the West End Production. Likewise, West End Production also garnered positive reviews from all around and also set the record of being nominated for eleven nominations at the Olivier Award. The original west end production of the musical came to an end on March 28, 2010.
Subsequently after the successes that both the West End and Broadway productions enjoyed, several touring productions of the musical were also launched. And since the musical is in theatres once again, don’t linger on it, and get your Hairspray Tickets today.

A message oriented musical that become an instant hit. It seems like people were just waiting for something like this to see. The heart of this award-winning songbook is about Black folks' no longer satisfied with being separate but equal. Though somehow it didnt seem to attract the Black Americans.
This musical is originally based on John Waters's 1988 cult film that bore the same name. Hairspray was placed in early 1960's Baltimore at that time segregation was still the custom. A loud White teenager integrated the local televised dance show as her goal and in the procedure stimulated race riots, interracial romance this resulted in the end of racial "innocence" epoch.
