Atlanta Opera Tickets Information
Initiated in the year 1979, the company has not only produced some brilliant theatrical and musical events but has also assisted in many educational and community programs. The idea for this company took birth after the Metropolitan Oapera packed its bags from Atlanta. That is when a few civic leaders and volunteers joined hands and formed The Atlanta Civic Opera.
The nascent company was a combination of two opposing opera companies of Atlanta, namely Georgia Opera and Atlanta Lyric Opera. Thomas Pasatieri, the well-known composer, was the one who took on the responsibility of being the young entity’s first artistic director and leader. With high hopes and enthusiastic performers, the company’s first ever production La Traviata was presented at the Fox Theatre on the 28th of March in 1980. Just as expected, everyone’s untiring efforts and hard work bore fruit and the show turned out to be a heart-warming success.
In December of the same year, a festive and cheerful gala was hosted by the company at the Symphony Hall. The event was highly popular and featured many renowned artists such as Samuel Ramey, Catherine Malfitano and Jerry Hadley. It was a huge success and pulled massive crowds thus adding to the popularity of the company.
Consequently, in 1985 the name of the company was changed to Atlanta Opera and has remained so since then. Also, Thomas Pasatieri was replaced by William Fred Scott as the company’s artistic director and the following year Alfred Kennedy took up the prestigious position of Executive Director. Under their combined leadership, the company prospered and achieved new heights of fame and glory with each passing year.
Moreover, in 1997 Atlanta Opera reached the $1 million spot in the ticket sales for just one season. In only a few years’ time, the company had achieved a major milestone and was on its way to many more of such successes. As the company grew stronger and more stable, it established its own rehearsal space, building and residence named The Atlanta Opera Center.
Furthermore, in 2001 the company was entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the 31st annual OPERA America Conference. Then later in 2006, it was announced that the residence would be shifted to Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center permanently. In the fall of 2007, this change was made and the company started off with the much acclaimed production Turandot. Fortunately, the new location proved to be beneficial for the company as the audiences increased by 60% only after two seasons at the new venue.
Over the years, the company has gained momentum. Its shows have become better and are viewed by a greater number of audiences each time. For over 36 years now, not only has it been providing jobs to a large number of people but has also been aiding in the development and promotion of local and international talent.
