The Virginia Tech Hokies - the representative teams for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, more commonly known as Virginia Tech, sponsors 21 sports and participates in the NCAA Division I level. Virginia Tech's men's sports are baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and field, and wrestling. Virginia Tech's women's sports are women's basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and track and field. The trendy VT is used as a symbol for Virginia Tech athletic teams. The "athletic VT" symbol is university’s emblem and appears frequently on licensed merchandise.
Virginia Tech's sports teams are called the Hokies, exceptional to the swim team, who are called “H2Okies” (with the chemical for mullah for water). And Hokie Bird - a turkey-like creature, is the Tech mascot
The word, which originated from the Old Hokie spirit yell, penned in 1896, is used alternatively with "Fighting Gobblers" referring to sports teams, fans, students, or alumni. The official university school colors - Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange - also were introduced in 1896. The colors were chosen by a committee because they made an inimitable selection not worn elsewhere at the time. The teams were formerly known as the "Fighting Gobblers," and the turkey motif was preserved regardless of the name change.
During the early years, a contention developed between the Virginia Military Institute and Virginia Tech, then called VPI. This rivalry developed into the original "Military Classic of the South," which was an annual football game between VMI and VPI on Thanksgiving Day in Roanoke, Virginia. It continued until 1970 when Tech's football program advanced and became too competitive for VMI. Today, Tech's major athletic rivalries include the Virginia Cavaliers and the Miami Hurricanes.
Virginia Tech's fight song, Tech Triumph, was written in 1919 and remains in use today. Tech Triumph is played at sporting events by both the Virginia Tech band, The Marching Virginians, and the Corps of Cadets' band, the Highty Tighties. The Old Hokie spirit yell, in use since 1896, is familiar to all Tech fans.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are a college football program that competes in NCAA Division I-A and the Coastal Division of Atlantic Coast Conference. Their home games are played at Lane Stadium, thought to be one of the noisiest stadiums in the country and recognized in 2005 by Rivals.com as having the best homefield advantage in the country.
Head coach Frank Beamer is the third-winningest active coach in Division I-A, ranking behind only Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno with 188 wins following the 2005 season. Beamer is also a Virginia Tech graduate and played defensive back for the Hokies.
The Hokies currently have the fifth-longest bowl game streak in the country, having competed in the postseason annually since 1993. In that period, the Hokies finished with a Top-10 ranking four times, won four conference championships (three Big East and one ACC), and played once for the national championship, defeated by Florida State University 46-29 in the 2000 Sugar Bowl.
