Tulsa Oilers or Ice Oilers are the member of Central Hockey League. The latter name isn’t an official one; they’re called that due to confusion between their name and another Tulsan baseball team called Tulsa Drillers.

Playing their home games in Maxwell Centre they are among those four teams that have played each season in the CHL. They played their first home on Jan 1 1929 in Tulsa Coliseum against Duluth Hornets, after they joined American Hockey Association (AHA) as an expansion team in 1928. And that is when their winning streak started. They won their first ever AHA championships during that season, they won their next championship in 1930-31 season.

The revival of AHA was seen in 1945, since it was dismembered due to the World War 2 at the end of 1941-1942 season. Oilers were one of the seven teams in the league. Team was owned by Sam Avey, so was their home ground Avey’s Coliseum. The team folded as the Coliseum was burnt to ashes after lightning struck it on 20 September 1952.

Later in 1959 CHL’s evolution started as Eastern Professional Hockey League was formed and controlled by NHL, but later in 1963 the league re-emerged as the Central Hockey League. Oilers played their first season in 1964-65 after they became the member of Central Hockey League. Due to the Receivership on the Team’s owner, Oilers left Tulsa in 1984, but came back after other teams of the league paid to keep Oilers in operation. Though they won the league’s championship, team disbanded by the end of that season.

Oilers re-appeared on the Ice hockey scene after Central Hockey League was revived in 1992, while the funding was provided by Chicago’s Horn Chen, the league was operated by Ray and his son Monte Miron. Both of them played their part in Tulsa Oilers in old CHL as Ray being the coach of the team and his son Monte played for Oilers in their 1973-74 season. After CHL’s revival in 1992 Oilers among three other teams the Memphis RiverKings, the Oklahoma City Blazers and the Wichita Thunder are the four teams that have played in each season in the CHL. For First CHL season of 1992-93, after its revival, the team of Tulsa Oilers was assembled by the Owner Jeff Lund, under the leadership of coach Garry Unger.

Oilers continued their winning tradition as the won the CHL championship for 1992-93 season after defeating Oklahoma City Blazers The ownership of the team was assumed by Lund in 1999 after being the GM of the team. Lund is known as the leader of number of Minor League Sports in Tulsa and is also the member of Executive Committee af2 League as well the Central Hockey League. He also owned an arena football team called Tulsa Talons, which he recently sold.
