The Hoosiers are an English pop band from Reading, Berkshire and Sweden. Formerly they were known as The Hoosier Complex. The band members are • Irwin Sparkes does vocals & guitar • Martin Skarendahl does bass • Alfonso Alan • Sharland is with drums Their single Worried about Ray reached #16 on the UK Singles Chart dated 24 June 2007 on downloads alone. The single has climbed to #5 with CD sales included. Their second single Goodbye Mr A has so far reached #4.

History
Hailing from Exeter, Reading and Stockholm, the band claim to create a sound that they call ‘we want to be indie but we're not cool enough', a sound combining a number of musical genres. The band members cite their influences as The Cure, Jeff Buckley, The Flaming Lips and XTC.

According to their band biography, Alfonso and Irwin spent some time in the United States, encouraged by their chemistry teacher, in an attempt to broaden their horizons. The pair won themselves a football scholarship at the University of Indianapolis. Having gathered enough material to compile an album, Alfonso and Irwin returned to London where they met Martin Skarendahl, a Swedish ex-fireman who was then working as a recording studio engineer.

The trio signed to RCA and has recorded an album together working on the title The Trick to Life, release date 22nd October 2007. The band has spoken of their desire to write songs, and say that the album will surprise people who only know their 2 singles. They have recently performed on the BBC Radio 2 Music Club. Their second single Goodbye Mr A got to #4 in the UK. The Hoosiers are three men, but they were not always three. Before they found the third member they were a two-piece, and before that they were two one pieces.

We would never be satisfied playing another song about drinking on a Saturday night, said Martin Skarendahl. And at this stage in our writing we didn't feel like subjecting the world to another love song, interjects Irwin. I don't have just one genre of music in my tape collection says Alfonso Sharland. I didn't grow up just wanting to be The Cure, Jeff Buckley, The Flaming Lips or XTC. All acts The Hoosiers cite as influences. it was a huge problem for band in terms of finding their sound. When we met Martin we all agreed that we wanted to cover a lot of space with our songs, not just keep it 4/4, foot to the floor, because that's not how we feel all the time said by a band member. Alfonso and Irwin grew up together on the outskirts of Reading and at the tender age of sixteen they found tutorage from a most unlikely source.

A Hoosier is a native of Indiana, the mid-western corn growing capital of America, the place we found ourselves when we found ourselves. says Al, relishing his role as scholarly lecturer.

When I listen to The Hoosiers, I'm hearing songs that have been lived in, songs that are describing everyman's rite of coming to terms with a grown-up world and its demands. If I had to sum up my early 20's in a word I'd say they were restless. You try a lot of things and you realize they're not the answer. You're searching and so are a lot of our songs. It's what I like about Tom Waits, Thom Yorke, Tom Jones, all the great T(h)om's: there's heart-ache, there's something lacking and you get that from the writing to the arrangement to the performance.

Irwin continues, unabated: There's definitely a theme of someone being incomplete and looking for something and hoping it's looking for them. Worried About Ray, Sadness Runs Through Him and Run Rabbit Run come from the point of view of a powerless character who loves someone but hasn't the power to save them and can only warn and suffer the anxiety of watching events unfold.
