This team was initially founded as Vancouver Canadians in 1978 and they played all their home games at the very famous Nat Bailey Stadium located on 4601 Ontario St. in Vancouver with a capacity to seat 6500 viewers. From 2000 through 2004 the Sacramento River Cats have won four consecutive Pacific Coast League Pacific South Division titles and in 2003 and 2004 they also won league championships back-to-back.

2007 saw the Sacramento River Cats in full form as they again won the league championship and Pacific South Division, River Cats outclassed the Richmond Braves 7-1 in Bricktown Showdown. In 2008 they repeated their success in league, class and divisional championships.
