The PBR events are initiated by Professional Bull Riders, Inc. which is an organization that deals with international professional bull riding. It is set up in Pueblo, Colorado. Bull riders from the USA, Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Canada hold memberships of the organization. At the present, PBR has eight hundred members. PBR came into being in 1992. At that time, twenty one of the top bull tamers decided to split from traditional rodeo. They pooled in money to set it up so they could exploit the growing interest of the Americans in the dangerous sport.
PBR now constitutes of four tours which together set up 300 events worldwide every year. Of these, Built Ford Tough Series is its major tour which alone constitutes 31 events across the USA. Each event opens with aplomb with pulsating music and special effects. What makes it one of the most competitive events is that it allows only the world’s top 40 bull riders to compete in a particular event. In PBR World Cup only the first 25 cowboys compete.
The main rule of a PBR event is that a rider has to stay on the back of a bucking bull for at least 8 seconds in order to qualify for consideration. A ride is judged on the basis of how the rider performs and with how much ferocity the bull extricates the rider from its back. Two judges evaluate the bull’s performance and another two judge the rider’s performance. After the first round, short-listing is done. Then the short-listed vie for number one position in the next round called ‘short go’. The rider scoring the maximum points is declared the winner. The winner is awarded a whooping total of $11 million dollars.
PBR events have gained popularity over the years. The ever growing fan base can be attested by the fact that in 2004 total viewership, television viewers and live attendees, of a PBR event was 16.4 million. In 2008, the number of viewers had increased to an astounding figure of 101.7 million. The events are televised on a number of channels which include Versus, Fox, CBS and NBC.
