Olympics Swimming
Swimming, along with track & field athletics it is one of the most popular spectator sports at the Games with the biggest number of events. It has been open to women since 1912
Olympic swimming has come a long way, to temperature-controlled 50-metre pools, wave-killing gutters, lane markers designed to reduce turbulence, and status as one of the Games' glamour events.
There were the venues, from the Bay of Zea in 1896, to Paris's River Seine in 1900, to a 100-metre pool constructed inside the athletics track in 1908. Then there were the events, from a 100-metre race for Greek sailors in 1896, to underwater and obstacle races in 1900, to a "plunge for distance" in 1908. That event involved a standing dive, with contestants then remaining motionless for 60 seconds till heads reach the surface.
At the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, six swimming events were contested. Only men competed in the swimming competition. The 50, 200, and 800 freestyle events were dropped from the previous edition, although they returned later, the relay was lengthened from 4x50 to 4x200, and the 400 breaststroke was shortened to 200 metres.
Canada and Finland made their first appearances in swimming, while Austria, Hungary, and the United States appeared each time. 14 nations competed in all, with 100 swimmers entering the events.
The men's 4x200 metre freestyle relay, or 800 metre team race, was one of 6 swimming events on the Swimming at the 1908 Summer Olympics programme. It was the only relay event on the schedule, and the first appearance of the 4x200 in Olympic competition.
The 1988 Summer Olympics took place in Seoul, South Korea. The swimming competition was notable for the seven medals.
Swimming at the 1980 Summer Olympics as usual was a part of the Swimming Sport; other two parts were Water Polo and Diving. They were not three separate sports, because they all were governed by one federation, FINA. Swimming discipline consisted of 26 events: 13 men's and 13 women's ones that held in the Swimming Pool of the Olympiski Sports Complex.
The 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany despite the tragic terrorist attacks against the Israeli athletes, the Olympics continued. The most spectacular athletic events were in swimming with Mark Spitz of the United States having a spectacular run. He was lined up for seven events. Mark Spitz won a unique medal count, seven Olympic titles and seven world records. According to the official Olympic website, "He took part in the 4x200m one hour after his final in the 100m butterfly. As for the 200m freestyle gold, it was his third medal in three days". In other countries, Australia won 5 medals in the 200m and 400m freestyle as well as the 200m individual medley, each with a new world record time. In addition, the silver and the bronze in the 800m and 100m freestyle was also won respectively.
Australia competed in swimming at the Summer Olympics since the 1900, after only sending a runner, Edwin Flack to the 1896 Summer Olympics. Frederick Lane was Australia's sole swimming representative, winning two individual gold medals. Women's events were added at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, with Fanny Durack and Mina Wylie being Australia's first female representatives, winning gold and silver in the 100m freestyle, which was the first women's event on the program. At the 1908 Summer Olympics and the 1912 Summer Olympics, Australia competed by sending a combined team with New Zealand. The table includes Malcolm Champion, a New Zealander who was part of the 4x200m freestyle relay team which captured gold in 1912.
Australia won a total of 52 gold medals in the sport, second to the United States, who won 205, almost four times. East Germany in third place with 32 golds, is widely attributed to state-sponsored systematic doping programs.
