Olympics Football Tickets Information
Olympics Football
The word "football" was first used long ago in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball. Then a time came when this game started referring to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These games were usually played by poor men like peasants, as opposed to the Polo, horse-riding, cards games and other sports which were often played by aristocrats.
History of Football
The history of Football is so old that it dates back to 476 BC–221 BC where a documented evidence of what is possibly a game resembling football can be found in a Chinese military manual written during the Warring States Period.
It is said that Football did not become part of modern Olympic Games Programme till 1896. However, a game similar to its present state was used to be played then and a competition, in which Ottoman Empire's teams were beaten by a team from Denmark, is recorded in a rather controversial History.
It is a time somewhere between 1900 and 1904 when tournaments were arranged on club level. Due to the stratum of these tournaments, today's FIFA does not recognize them as International Football events of that time. In 1906, different countries participated and Denmark won the final against Smyrna; today Izmir in Turkey; by 9-0.
Finally, the first official men's Olympic soccer tournament made its debut in 1908 London Games, where Denmark was lost by Great Britain. This is how Great Briton claimed the first soccer gold medal. Since that time, no Olympic Games Program is ever completed without the all-famous soccer, with the exception of the 1932 Games at Los Angeles.
US and the Football
The United States has competed in the men's Olympic finals 12 times, including five straight tournaments from 1984 to 2000. In addition, the U.S. qualified for 1980 Moscow Games but did not participate following a boycott by the U.S. Olympic Committee. The U.S. missed out on qualifying for the 2004 Athens Olympics, winning their group but then losing a one-game qualifying match against Mexico. Talking about the women soccer, the women played and won two FIFA World Championships; in 1991 and 1999. They had also lifted a coveted trophy of Olympic with gold medals in 1996 in Atlanta and in 2004 in Athens.
Restrictions in 1992 Barcelona Games
There has been a great shift from 1992 Barcelona Games with regards to the Olympic soccer tournament, when the men's tournament was put on restriction of 23 years of age; for the first time. Host Spain played the final and went all out to fetch a top title at Barcelona in front of 95,000 euphoric fans. There is little doubt that the poor attendance in Spain played a role in the changes made for the 1996 Atlanta Games. The interest of general public was much increased after then and Football grew to become the most favourite game world over.
New rules in Atlanta '96 Games
The Atlanta '96 games brought two vital changes in the game of Football. For the first time, the women's soccer was included in the Olympic Program. Secondly, the men's tournament was recovered from an unjust age restriction and the participating teams were allowed to include three "wild card" players. "Wild card" players were those players who either over 23 years of age or had previously played in an Olympic Games soccer tournament. This new rule helped many a teams in bringing along their experienced players and winning their matches on the skill and techniques of those veterans.
In 2000, veteran defenders Jeff Agoos and Frankie Hejduk, as well as goalkeeper Brad Friedel, were selected as the USA's overage players, helping the team on an unprecedented tournament run which saw the U.S. advance to the medal round before falling in the semifinals to a strong Spanish team.
1996 Atlanta Games
The U.S. Women's National Team claimed the first gold medal at the Atlanta Games with a 2-1 victory over China before 76,481 fans on August 1, 1996 in Athens, Georgia. This attendance was recorded as the largest crowd to ever watch a women's athletic event and it set forth the stage for the incredibly successful FIFA Women's World Cup in the U.S. in 1999.
2000 Games
As they did in 1996, the U.S. Women has a tough run to the medal stand in 2000, winning from China, Nigeria and Norway. In the Gold Medal match, a much better Norwegian team out smarted US team and went on to fetch the gold with a gripping 3-2 triumph.
2004 Athens Games
The 2004 Athens Games were a decent end for a few but favourite U.S. veterans, like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Joy Fawcett, who left the sporting world with same valour and vigour as they joined in yester years as champions. The marvelous and stunning matches at semi-final and final level against Germany and Brazil were extended to extra-time. In the end, the US high-quality team claimed the gold medals.
