Olympics Flatwater Canoe kayak Tickets Information

Olympics Flatwater Canoe kayak
Canoeing has developed into a popular water sport, carried out in canoes and kayaks. Canoes and Kayaks are small boats that are pointed at both ends. Both types of crafts are propelled through water by paddles.

History
For many years, Canoes and Kayaks have been used for traveling by people of different origins. Canoes were used for two purposes. One aim was to indulge in activities such as fishing and hunting. Secondly it was a means for carrying soldiers into battles. Originally, the canoe was built of an open-topped bark, which was developed by the Native North Americans. Kayaks on the other hand, were built by stretching animal skins over a frame of wood. The kayaks were first developed by the Aleuts and Inuits of the Northern Arctic regions. The idea was to develop a close-topped kayak, in order to prevent the cold artic waters from entering the canoe.

Competition
During the 19th century, British barrister John MacGregor was greatly interested in the ancient kayaks. He designed a boat that resembled the early kayak and set out on a journey in the waters of Europe. He became popular and people started to replicate his designed boat. The famous Royal Club of London was founded by him in 1866 and later the organization developed this sport for competitions. Later, other canoe clubs also started originating such as the New York Canoe Club. World championships in canoeing began in 1938. The first international federation to encourage canoeing to develop into a competitive sport was the Internationale Representantskapet för Kanotidrott (IRK), formed in 1924. After World War II, this organization was succeeded by the Fédération Internationale de Canoë (FIC).

Olympics
Originally, the canoes and kayaks were built of materials such as wood covered with bark and whale bone covered with animal skins. No one could have believed that boats made of these building materials could ever emerge as a popular Olympic sport. Over the years, the building materials of these kayaks have changed greatly and these kayaks have developed into a famous competitive sport. Today, the kayaks which were life savers to the Inuits in the Artic region for centuries have become the racing kayaks of the modern world. Events are held for men with one, two, or four paddlers in a canoe or kayak. Women compete only in kayak events both at the Olympics and internationally, in singles, doubles, and quads.

At the 1924 Olympic Games, Canoe/ Kayak was a demonstration sport, which is an event not officially part of the Olympic program. By 1936, the canoeing became an official Olympic sport with full-medal status, and swimmers from a wide range of countries started competing in these boats. Various canoe and kayak events have launched in Olympics since then. Women began Olympic canoeing, competing only in kayaks, in 1948. The athletes of Europe have stood first in these canoeing competitions, followed by those from Germany, Sweden and former Soviet Union.

Canoeing has emerged as a popular water sport in Europe. At the Olympic Games and other international competitions, Europeans take lead and have won over 90% of all Olympic medals in canoeing. Earlier, speed races were contested among teams for distances of 1,000 and 10,000 meters for men and 5000 meters for women. Later, however, long distance races were eliminated after the 1956 Olympics and 1993 World Championships. World championships are contested over 200, 500 and 1000 meters.

Equipment used for Canoeing
The material originally used for canoes/kayaks have changed with time. However, the basic equipment remains the same. Most canoes are light, narrow open topped boats which require one or more paddlers. The paddlers push the boat using single-blade paddles from a kneeling position. Kayaks on the other hand, are completely closed except for an opening for each occupant.

The kayaks are designed to keep the water out of the boat. A Blade is a wide part of the paddle which propels through water to push the boat. Canoes and Kayaks may have single or double bladed paddles. Grip is the end of a canoe paddle opposite from the blade. Cockpit is a closed space in a kayak or canoe where paddlers sit. The deck is a closed-in area over the stem of a canoe or kayak designed to shed water and make the gunwales strong enough to tolerate the water currents. Paddlers wear spray skirts which attach around the cockpit and seal them within the boat to prevent water from entering. Lastly, the frame or body of the boat is termed as the Hull.
