Olympics Diving Tickets Information

Diving refers to acrobatics whilst jumping or falling into water from a platform or springboard of a certain height. Diving is internationally-recognized and it is part of the Olympic Games. In addition, unstructured and non-competitive diving is a common recreational pastime in places where swimming is popular. It is one of the more popular Olympic sports with spectators. Successful competitors possess the same characteristics as gymnasts and competitive cheerleaders, including strength, flexibility, kinesthetic judgment and air awareness.

In the recent past, the success and prominence of Greg Louganis led to American strength internationally. China came to prominence as the greatest diving nation several decades ago when the sport was revolutionized by national coach Liang Boxi. China lost few world titles though. Other powers including Australia and Canada generally import Chinese coaches.

Diving was first introduced in the official programme at the 1904 Games of St. Louis and has been an Olympic sport since. It was known as "fancy diving" for the acrobatic stunts performed by divers during the dive (such as somersaults and twists). This discipline of Aquatics, along with swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo, is regulated and supervised by the International Swimming Federation (FINA), the international federation (IF) for aquatic sports.

The first Olympic diving events were contested by men and consisted of a platform diving event ("fancy high diving") and also a plunge for distance event, which heralded victorious the diver who could reach the farthest underwater, while remaining motionless after a ground-level standing dive. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, men's springboard diving was added to the programme replacing the plunge for distance, regarded as uninteresting. Women's diving debut happened at the 1912 Summer Olympics in the platform event and was expanded to springboard diving at the 1920 Summer Olympics. A parallel platform diving event for men, called "plain high diving", was presented at the Games of the V Olympiad. No acrobatic moves were allowed, only a simple straight dive off the platform. It was last contested at the 1924 Summer Olympics after which it was merged with "fancy high diving" into one competition renamed "highboard diving".

By the time of the 1996 Summer Olympics, the diving events were the same as in 1928. However, four years later in Sydney, the inclusion of a synchronized diving variant for the springboard and platform events elevated the list up to eight events. Most diving competitions consist of three disciplines: 1m, 3m and tower, platform. Competitive athletes are divided by gender, and often by age groups too. In tower events, competitors are allowed to perform their dives on either the five, seven and a half or ten meter towers, although high level meets, including the Olympic Games and world championships, usually require all dives to be executed from the ten meter.

Synchronized diving was adopted in 2000. In this event, two divers form a team and attempt to perform dives simultaneously. The dives are usually identical; however, they may be opposite or a pinwheel. This is an impressive spectacle, and requires great coordination between the team-mates. In these events, synchronicity is valued as highly as technical skill. Thus, if both divers perform their individual dives badly, but in the same way, they will still score fairly well.

To win dive meets, divers create a dive list in advance of the meet. To win the meet the diver must accumulate more points than other divers. Usually simple dives with low DDs look good to spectators but will not win meets. The competitive diver attempts the highest DD dives possible to achieve consistent, high scores. If divers are scoring 8 or 9 on most dives, it may be a sign of their extreme skill, or it may be a sign that their dive list is not competitive, and they may lose the meet to a diver with higher DDs and lower scores.
