Olympics Basketball Tickets Information
Olympics Basketball
Basketball has gone a long way from a demonstration sport in 1904 Olympics (St. Louis, Missouri) to a medal sport in 1936 Olympics (Berlin) where 21 teams competed for the gold medal. It was this year' Olympics that United States established itself as the winner to mark its dominance in this Olympics sport by beating Canada 19-8 in the finals. The game has changed a lot in its look and proficiency since then. The clay court has been replaced by wooden court.
Basketball is not only a Global Game but also an international game. Its spread to the corners of the world is attributed to the YMCAs and service men who took it along themselves wherever they went. In 1932, eight nations agreed to form The Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) giving Basketball an international status. Today, FIBA oversees international competition involving 212 national basketball federations. It can be safely estimated that 450 million people play basketball at some level.
Origination and Rise
- The game of Basketball was first conceived in 1891 by a Canadian Dr. James Naismith living in the United States.
- Basketball debuted at the 1904 Saint Louis Olympic Games as demonstration and not as an official sport. The game transformed a lot owing to larger number of participants and players as it gained recognition and popularity both. The rules and equipment changed at a rapid pace in the first few years.
- The popularity of the game rose swiftly and by 1932, the sport was so popular that a need was felt to regulate the game through an international governing body resulting in the establishment of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) which was born in 1932. In 1935, the International Olympic Committee recognized basketball as one of the world's major sports.
- During the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games, held under Hitler's reign, basketball was first played as an Olympic sport. It was played outdoors on sand courts.
- Women's Olympic basketball was first introduced in 1974 during the Montreal Olympic Games.
