Ole Miss Rebels
Initially known as the Mississippi Flood, Rebels is the sports team of University of Mississippi that plays for the Southeastern Conference, West Division of the Division I of NCAA. The team was renamed to Rebels in 1935 and the teams colors are cardinal red and navy blue.
Rebels have a long history of competing in the intercollegiate athletics in 18 different men's and women's sports. Women's basketball program "The Ole Miss Lady Rebels Basketball" was started in 1974. Out of the total of 27 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournaments, Lady Rebels competed in 17 tournaments. After the entire history of the program, the team has winning average of 66.7%.
One of the most remarkable players of the team was guard Armintie Price who played for the Lady Rebel for the 2003-04 season. It was due to her performance that she was also awarded with the SEC Freshman of the Year Award. Price also won Defensive Player of the year award twice, making her the only player ever to win that award twice.
In NCAA history Price is the one of two players who was able to score a total of 2000 points, along with 400 steals and assists and 1000 rebounds. She was also the finalist for the Wooden Award, as a senior and was induced in the Kodak All American Team.
Under her leadership the team was able to make an appearance in Elite Eight, which the team was unable to do before Price became a part of it. In 2007 WNBA draft, she was drafted to Chicago Sky, where gave brilliant performance in her first season and was also award with the Rookie of the Year honors.
Hall of Famer, Van Chancellor, originally coached Lady Rebel's team for about eighteen years. On April 26, 2007 Renee Ladner took the charge of the Lady Rebel as the head coach as Carol Ross resigned as the head coach of the team.
Men's Basketball team, for the 2006-07 season was led by the head coach Andy Kennedy. The season ended with a tie for the first spot in the SEC West. Having the players like Todd Abernethy, Bam Doyne and Clarence Sanders, team finished the season after scoring 21-13 record.
The team made their way to the National Invitation Tournament's second round but unfortunately the team lost to Clemson University. Also in the year 2007, which was Kennedy's debut season as the head coach of the team, he was entitled Coach of the Year.
Off all the sports programs at the Mississippi University, the Ole Miss Tennis program is considered to be the most elite college tennis programs nationwide. Apart from wining SEC Western Division Championships 6 times, the team has also been able to stay in the top ten ranks of the SEC for the past 12 years.
As of today, team has won a total of 4 SEC overall championships in 1996, 1999, 2004, and 2005. An annual series held between Ole Miss Rebels and Mississippi State University Bulldogs is known as the Mississippi Cup and Rebels have been able to win Mississippi cup for 9 years in a row.
