Oakland Athletics Tickets Information

Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics are a Major League Baseball team based in Oakland, California. They play in the Western Division of the American League. The team is very popular with its nick name A's.

Origins:
Origin of the team name
The Athletics' name dates back to 1860 when an amateur team, the Athletic (Club) of Philadelphia, was formed.

Franchise history
The beginning:
The franchise that would become the modern Athletics originated in 1901 as a new franchise in the American League. In 1900, league president Bancroft (Ban) Johnson renamed the Western League as the American League. It declared itself the second major league in 1901.

New franchises were created in the east and some franchises were eliminated in the West by Johnson in 1901. Philadelphia was a new franchise created to compete with the National League’s Philadelphia Phillies. The recruitment of former catcher Connie Mack was made to manage the club. Mack in turn persuaded Phillies minority owner Ben Shibe as well as others to invest in the team, which would be called the Philadelphia Athletics. Mack himself bought a 25 percent interest.

The First Dynasty and aftermath
The A’s quickly established themselves as one of the dominant teams in the new league in the early years. The team was successful in winning the A.L. pennant six times (1902, 1905, 1910, 1911, 1913 and 1914), winning the World Series in 1910, 1911 and 1913. They set an outstanding record of winning over 100 games in 1911 and 1912, and 99 games in 1914. The team was known for its “$100,000 Infield,”. It consisted of John "Stuffy" McInnis (first base), Eddie Collins (second base), Frank "Home Run" Baker (third base) and Jack Barry (shortstop), as well as pitchers Eddie Plank and Charles "Chief" Bender. Plank has the honor of holding the club record for career victories, with 284.

In 1909, the A's moved into Shibe Park which was the majors' first concrete-and-steel ballpark. Later in the decade, Mack became a full partner with Shibe after buying another 25 percent of the team's stock. While retaining control over the business side, Shibe ceded Mack full control over the baseball side.

The Second Dynasty (1927–1933)
After that, Mack began to build another winner. In 1927 and 1928, the Athletics finished second to the New York Yankees. They were the victorious of pennants in 1929, 1930 and 1931. They also won the World Series in 1929 and 1930. The A's won over 100 games in each of the three years.

The Third Dynasty (1972–1975)
Just as the team was beginning to gel it arrived in Oakland. They moved into Oakland-Alameda Coliseum. On May 8, 1968 in a game against the Minnesota Twins, Jim "Catfish" Hunter was successful in pitching the first perfect game in the American League since 1922.

The A's finished the 1968 season with an 82–80 record. It was their first winning season since 1952 and Bob Kennedy was the manager of the team at that time. With expansion to 12 teams in 1969, the American League was divided into two 6-team divisions.

Events and records of note
The Oakland Athletics showed outstanding performance from August 13 to September 4, 2002. They were successful in winning an American League record 20 games in a row,. The last three games were won in dramatic fashion, each victory coming in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Major League record for consecutive wins is 26, set by the NL's New York Giants in 1916. There was a tie game embedded in that winning streak and the record for consecutive wins with no ties is 21, held by the Chicago Cubs on their way to the NL pennant in 1935.

The Athletics played the Philadelphia Phillies, for the first time in a regular season game in June of 2003. Previously they had only played each other in exhibition games, dubbed "The City Series". These games were played annually from 1903-1954. The A's had winning record of 123 games to the Phils' 115, with two ties.

For the first game of the 3 game series, Ceremonies were held at Veterans Stadium. Also former Philadelphia A's players were honored on the field. The Phillies won the series against the A's, 2–1.

They played each other again in June of 2005 in Oakland. This time the White Elephants defeating their former rivals two games to one.

In 1982, Rickey Henderson shattered Lou Brock's modern major league record by stealing 130 bases in a single season, a total which has not been approached since. On May 1, 1991, One of baseball's most famous records was broken by Henderson when he stole the 939th base of his career, one more than Lou Brock.
