Notre Dame Fighting Irish Tickets Information
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are well known varsity sports teams of the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame's nickname comes from Irish immigrant soldiers of the Civil War. They fought against the Union's Irish Brigade, and consisted of the 63rd NY, 88th NY, 69th NY, 116th Pennsylvania, and 28th Mass. Infantry Regiments. This has been held in memory through the poetry of Joyce Kilmer. Kilmer served with one of the Irish Brigade regiments during First World War.
It is thought that Notre Dame's claim to its nickname is fair and justified because its third president belonged to a famous Irish Brigade chaplain. His contributions at Gettysburg have been commemorated in the "Absolution Under Fire". This is part of Notre Dame's art collection, which reflects the significance of this commemoration.
The Notre Dame athletic teams are called the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame additionally had different types of unofficial nicknames. At some point, they were also called the "Terriers," unofficially. This was because of the Irish dog breed. Often, an Irish Terrier would be spotted on the ND football sidelines.
The Notre Dame school has a progressive Division I athletic program. It is, however, well known for its football program. It established its first football team in 1887. The football team has a long history behind it. It has under its belt eleven consensus NCAA football championships, a 74.4% winning percentage, the most consensus All-Americans of any school, more than 800 all time wins, 7 Heisman Trophy winners, and well known head coaches. However, Notre Dame has recently found it hard to find a suitable head coach.
Besides football, Notre Dame has had success in its other sports as well. For example, the men's basketball team has managed to make 28 NCAA Tournament appearances. It also made it to the Final Four in 1978. The basketball team also managed to end UCLA's 88-game winning stretch in 1974. Previously, they ended UCLA's 45-game winning streak [1971].
In Ice Hockey, the Notre Dame's men's team did very well. The team was coached by Jeff Jackson and the captain was T.J. Jindra. The team had managed to win the CCHA season and tournament championships [2007]. The record they set during this period was: 28-6-3, and this team was at the #2 overall spot in the 2007 NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament. They were, however, #1 seed in the Midwest bracket.
